WAGON-STAKE POCKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,246, dated October 19, 1886,

Be it known that I, IIERMAN H. BoTnE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in \Vagon-Stake Pocket-s, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact dc scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing two of my improved pockets, a stake, and part of the wagonbed. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the pocket. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the pocket, taken on line 3 3, Fig. 4, showing part of the wagon-bed. Fig. 4 is a section, taken on line 4 4, Fig. 3.

My invention relates to an improved pocket for holding wagon-stakes; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter ful- 1y described, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, A represents part of a wagon-bed, and B one of the stakes.

0 represents my improved pocket, having a face-piece, D, by which it is secured by bolts or screws E to the wagon-bed. There may be any desired number placed a suitable distance apart. The faceplate D extends entirely across the pocket, as shown, forming a flat surface that bears or rests against the bed, as shown in Fig. 1, and the part of the face-plate between the sides of the pocket forms the back of the pocket and serves as a metallic bearing between the stake and wood of the bed, to prevent the wood from being worn and indented by the stake. The back of the pocket thus formed is made vertical, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the stake (which has a flat inner surface) is held in an upright position.

The front D of the pocket is made tapering downward, and the sides D are also made tapering downward, so that the stake (which is made tapering on its front surface and at its sides) is held securely in the pocket, and is not liable to be lost by being jolted out of the pocket, the tapering front and sides of the pocket acting like a wedge to retain the stake. bearing all around the stake, and a bearing that will retain the stake in its upright position and prevent it ffom being lost by the jolting of the wagon.

The outer corners, F, of the pocket are made rounding, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so as not to present a sharp surface, and the inner parts of the sides are enlarged, as shown at G, where they unite with the face-plate D to add strength to the pocket.

The stake B is not provided with a shoulder that fits down upon the pocket, (as stakes are usually made,) and there is no necessity for a shoulder with an all-metallic pocket, for the reason that a sufficiently tight fit is obtained between the stake and pocket without the use of a shoulder.

This form of pocket can be attached to the wagon-bed in much less time than it requires to attach the old form of pocket, inasmuch as there is no fitting of the pocket upon the bed required, so that the stake will fit snugly in the pocket, and, as the stake requires no shoulder, there is also a saving of expense in the manufacture of the stakes.

I claim as-my invention- 1. A pocket for wagon-stakes, rectangular in cross-section, having a vertical back with extensions affording ineans of attachment to the wagonbody, and having its remaining portion-i. e., the front and sides-inclined i11- wardly and tending to one common point, by which construction the stake may be held by wedging therein, it having no other support or supports, substantially as set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a pocket for wagon-stakes, having a tapering front, taporing sides, and a vertical back, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In combination with a pocket having a tapering front, tapering sides, and a vertical back, a shoulder-less stake having a straight back, tapering sides, and a tapering front, substantially as set forth.
