FENCE-POST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,973, dated Getober 19, 1886.

Be it known that I, JEREMIAH CODER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monclova, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to posts principally designed for the construction of fences.

It consists in the novel features more fully hereinafter set forth, claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a front view. Fig. 2 is a side view, parts broken away, of the upper part on an enlarged scale. Fig.;3 is a front view of the lower part on a large scale.

The object of the invention is to devise a post made entirely of earthy matter, except a small strip of wood, which is secured thereto for fastening the picket-rails or barb-wires or boards, whereby the cost of construction of fences is considerably reduced and the fences themselves made more lasting.

The improvement consists in the post, made oftwo parts, A and B. The lower part, B, is designed to have its lower end setin theground, and is provided with shoulders I) near the upper end, on which the end of the upper part, A, rests and is prevented from slipping down too far. The upper part, A, is preferably tubular throughout, to reduce the weight and lessentheamountofmaterial. Itisprovidedon one side with a strip of wood, 0, secured thereto, to which the fence boards or rails or barbwires can be nailed. It is preferably secured by strap 0 or pieces of thin bar metal, having one end secured to the post and its other end passed through an opening in the strip and clinched. The end fastened to the post may be molded therein or passed through an.

opening left in the side for the purpose and clinched upon the inner side, as shown in Fig. 2. The strip may be longer or shorter than the post, as desired, and there may be more than one.

The posts may be made of potters clay or earthy matter, such as that commonly used in the manufacture ofbricks, drain-pipes,&c.,and are baked in the usual manner. They may be 55 glazed or not, as desired. The lower part is solid, for strength, and also to prevent its filling with water and bursting when frozen. The upper part is tubular, and in practice rests upon the lugs Z), formed upon the part B. The space between the lugs and the lower end of the part permits the escape of water in wet Weather, so it cannot accumulate and become stagnant in warm weather or freeze and burst said part in cold weather.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-

The llCFUlIl-(lQSCllbQCl post, consisting of the upper part, A, tubular throughout its entire length, and the lower part, 13, having lugs I), located at a distance from its upper end, which end is adapted to be inserted in the lower end of the upper part and have spaces between its sides and the sides of the upper part for the escape of moisture, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination of the tubular part A, made of earthenware, the wooden strip secured to a side thereof, and the part B, having its upper end fitted in the lower end of the part A, and having spaces between its sides and the sides of said partA for the escape of moisture, and provided with lugs I), which support the upper part, substantially as set forth.
