0. G. DEMING.
VEHICLE WHEEL.
UNITE STATES PATENT Erica.
GHARL ES GAYLORD DEMING, OF LEEDS, NFAV YORK.
VEHICLE-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,918, dated October .19, 1886,
Application filed August 18, 1886. Serial No. -211,180.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES GAYLORD DEM- ING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leeds,in the county of Greene and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vheels for Vehicles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure l of the drawings is a side elevation of a vehicle-wheel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the sections not yet put together; and Fig. 3 is a group of details showing the rings which hold the parts of the spokes together at a point near the ends of the hub-fingers, together with sections of the spokes, tire, and telly.
In the drawings, A represents a strip of bandsteel bent to form an are, a, of the felly and two half-spol:es,aa,at an equal angle thereto. It is concaved on the outside to form a semicircle.
B is the hub, which is provided with the radial fingers b.-one for each spoke a a. These fingers are made fast to or integral with the hub and of a diameter about which the (No model.)
half-spokes a a will meet and form a close joint, being held to the fingers by the rings 0. From the rings to the hub B there is no flange. After these sections have been all arranged on the hub a tire, I), is shrunk on in the usual manner, so as to hold them firmly in place; In actual practice I find this wheel to possess great elasticity and strength, while it promises a corresponding durability.
I am aware that steel as well as cast and wrought iron have been heretofore employed in the construction of vehicle-wheels; also that channeled metal has been used for wheels and other articles.
I am aware that a velocipede-whcel has been made with two half-spokes in each section; but the inner ends are let directly into the hub, while the several sections are brazed together. It has no round hub-fingers and no rings, like mine, while the felly-sections are not arcs of a circle, but irregular curves, which would not suit my purpose; but
\Vhat I do claim, and ters Patent, is-
The combination of the compound spoke and felly sections A, the fingered hub B, the rings 0, and the tire D, to make up the wheel described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES GAYLORD DEMING.
