SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,579, dated October 12, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MORTON E. CONVERSE, of Winchendomiirthe county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented anImproved Olamp'for Gluing Boxes and Similar Articles, and I doherebydeclare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw- .ings, making part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a top View of a clamp in which to glue rectangular boxes constructed with my improvements; Fig. 2, a front view ofthe same; Fig. 3, a lefthand end view thereof; Fig. 4, a vertical section of the same in a plane indicated by the line 1 1, Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a top view ofthe clamp with a box clamped therein; Fig. 6, a front view of the same.

Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.

The following parts compose the complete clamp: A is the base or body of the clamp,on which the other parts are mounted, and may be a simple rectangular piece'of board. B is a stationary holder, against which one side of the box X is placed for clamping the same. 0 is a stationary holder, against which one end of the box bears when clamped. D is a yielding or movable springholder, which presses against the otherside of the box when clamped, and E is another yielding or spring holder, which presses against the outer end of the box when clamped. One stationary holder, preferably the side holder, B, is made of considerable length, in order to hold the box firmly in its position. and keep it from swinging around. 'Of course, two or more such stationary holders in line might be used; but the single long holder answers the purpose perfectly. The other stationary holder, 0, may be ordi narily a simple round pin, as shown, projecting up from the base, particularly for clamping small boxes, for which the invention is specially adapted; or two or more pins might be used. The two spring-holders D E may also be simple spring-wires, as represented. The spring-holders, when made of wires, as shown, may be held by screws a a and staypins I) b. The inner faces or sides of theholders, preferably, are inclined a little backward from bottom to top, to facilitate the insertion of the boxes between them, and to produce a wedging and compressing action on the sides and ends of the boxes, and thus bring their glued'surfaces close together and make good joints. If it is desired to glue boxes of different sizes in the same clamps, three of the holders may be adjustable in position. It is, of

course, unnecessary to adjust the'main holder B in any case.

One of the main improvementsin this clamp consists in a metallic coverings, for the upper surface of the base A, and of the front side or any part thereof subject to be smeared by the liquid glue, and a similar covering, (Z, for the inner and top surfaces of the guide-holder B, or such surfaces thereof as/are subject to be smeared with glue, those parts being ordinaril y made of wood. The purpose of this metallic covering is to prevent the glue from sticking to the clamp and to enable it to be readily removed,if any should be left thereon. Simple sheet-zinc or tin-plate is very suitable for this covering, being simply nailed to the wood, or otherwise attached in an easy and inexpensive way. The wire' ho1ders, being made of metal, need no such protection.

These clamps are inexpensive,being made of cheap material and quickly constructed.

The boxis inserted in the clamp, which holds the j oints close until the glue is sufficicn'tly set to make the contiguous parts adhere together, which ordinarily takesplaee within about five minutes after the box is placed in the clamp.

The method or principle of clamping is ap plied in whatever manner the parts of the box may be combined or united.

With a sufficient number of these clamps say fifty-boxes may be held till the glue is set a as fast as two attendants can insert and remove the same.

I claim as my invention- 1.. In a gluingclamp, the combination of the base A, covered with sheet metal, the guideholder B, faced with sheet metal, the fixed end holder, (7, and the counter spring-holders D E, placed, respectively, opposite to the holders B O, and pressing in directions at right angles to each other, whereby pressure is produced upon all sides of the box,substantially'as and for the purpose herein specified.

2. The combination of the base A, long stationary guide-holder B, against which one side of each article glued is placed, stationary holder 0, against which an end or side of the article adjacent to the first or guide side is placed, and counter spring-holders D E, respectively opposite to the holders B (l, and bearing against the remainingsides of the article, substantially as herein set forth.
