Description
(NoModeL) I J. .B. WOOD.
KNIFE FOR WOOD WORKING MACHINERY. No. 350,520. Patented Oct. 12. 1886.
Ill
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. WOOD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO CHARLES w. TREMAIN AND WILLIAM B. eoUsE, BOTH OF-SAME PLACE.
KNIFE FORVWOOD-WORKINGIMACHINERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 350,520, dated October 12 1886.
7 Application filed March 16, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
. Bev it known that I, JOSEPH B. Woon, a citizen of the United States of America, residing atOhicago, in the county of Cook and State of. Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives for VVood-Working Machinery,.of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
This my invention has for its object to provide a knife or cutter for planing and shaping machines, and for other wood-working machinery with cutting-edges, that by the peculiar shape will break the chips or shavings I 1 as they are cut from the wood to becomeshort,
thereby relieving the knife more readily, and
that at the same time has increased strength and durability in its cutting-edges.
For that purpose my invention consists in filing or grinding with a small emery-wheel or otherwise forming along the edge of the knife that is opposite to the basil a rounded groove or concave ohamfer that will transfer the cutting-edge from the straight or permanent face about one-third of the thickness of the knife-plate toward the opposite or basiled side of the knife, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 o representsa section of the knife on an enlarged that will readily as set forth. scale; Fig. 2, a cross-section of a cutter-head Serial No. 195,425. (No model.)
A denotes the knife-plate, of flat steel, and a the basil, which, as usuah-forms an obtuse angle with the back ofthe knife, and which is ground down for sharpening the cuttingedge; and b is a rounded groove or concave chamfer filed or ground or otherwise cut in the edge of the straight face of the knife, which groove, as will 'be noticed, changes the position of the working or cutting edge of such knife, and moves it somewhat toward the back of the same. By this groove b the cutting-edge is braced and re-enforced against breaking out, by being much stronger and more durable, without thereby reducing the cutting qualities of the same, and a chip or shaving being cut away must follow the curve of groove 1), and thereby will break into short fragments clear the knives, and are therefore less liable to interfere with the 'operation.
I am aware that knives of the character described have been provided with an auxiliary strip grooved substantially as on mine, and therefore I disclaim such a construction; but
What I claim is As anew article of manufacture, a woodworking knife having formed in its blade a rounded grooveorconcaved cham fer, the same being situated on the side opposite the basil,
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
