Cl. 22954 7 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A bag or sack having a block closure at least at one of its ends is provided with a carrying handle arrangement at said one end which comprises two U-shaped carrying handles attached to opposite side walls of the bag, the free ends of the limbs of each U-shaped handle being attached to the associated side wall adjacent the block closure, the carrying handles being disposed opposite each other so that the hand grip part of each carrying handle formed by the base of the U is parallel with the folds of the block closure and the hand grip part of the other handle.

This invention relates to sacks or bags of flexible sheet material having two generally parallel side walls and a block closure formed of the folded sheet material at least at one end of the sack or bag, the block closure extending between said side walls and being connected thereto along two parallel spaced apart folds, the sack or bag having a carrying handle arrangement adjacent said end thereof. Such sacks or bags are hereinafter referred to as bags of the kind specified.

It is an object of the invention to provide a bag of the kind specified with a carrying handle arrangement by means of which a large load in the bag can be supported, which will permit the carrying hand to adopt a natural position, and which permits the bag to be carried easily by two persons.

According to the invention we provide a bag of the kind specified wherein said carrying handle arrangement comprises two U-shaped carrying handles attached to opposite side walls of the bag, the free ends of the limbs of each U-shaped handle being attached to the associated side Wall adjacent the block closure, the carrying handles being disposed opposite each other so that the hand grip part of each carrying handle formed by the base of the U is parallel with the folds of the block closure and the hand grip part of the other handle.

The carrying handle arrangement according to the invention, having a total of four fixing points, can support large bag weights. The disposition of the hand grips facilitates convenient carrying of the bag by one person and the fact that there are two handles also facilitates the convenient carrying of particularly heavy bags by two persons.

The invention is of particular advantage when applied to block bottom valve bags which have a block closure at both their ends. In this case the handles are located adjacent that block closure which has no filling valve so that, when carrying the bag, the filling valve is located at the bottom of the bag. In this manner, manipulating the bag when emptying its contents is considerably facilitated.

The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

FIGURE 1 shows a plan view of a folded bag having two block closures with a filling valve in the zone of one block closure and carrying handles in the zone of the other block closure, and

FIGURE 2 shows a perspective view of the filled bag of FIGURE 1.

As shown in FIGURE 1 a bag 1 formed of flexible sheet material such as paper or synthetic plastics has a block closure at each end formed of the folded sheet material. One of the block closures is provided with a valve 2, adhesively fixed into one block closure, and carrying handles 3, 3 disposed in the zone of the other block closure. Each carrying handle is preformed in U- shape and where the sack is of paper or synthetic plastic comprises a strip of multiple-folded strong paper or synthetic plastics sheet respectively. The two ends of each of the carrying handles 3, 3' are secured by adhesion if paper or by welding if plastics to the side wall of the bag adjoining one of two parallel spaced apart folds 5, 5' which connect flaps 4, 4' forming part of the adjacent block closure, with the side walls of the bag. The carrying handles 3, 3 are disposed symmetrically relative to each other. Their hand-grip parts formed by the bases of the Us extend parallel to each other and parallel to the folds 5, 5'.

To improve transmission of the carrying forces to the bag, the side walls of the bag adjoining the folds 5, 5 are reinforced in the carrying handle zone by reinforcing flaps 6, adhesively attached on the interior and/or the exterior, the externally adhesively fixed flaps overlapping the ends of the carrying handles as shown.

The bag comprises a plurality of plies of the sheet material and said plies are joined to each other by spot adhesion 7 or welding (according to the sheet material) in the zone in which the carrying handles are attached as indicated at 7. Accordingly, the individual plies are joined to each other without the flexibility of the sack being impaired in that region.

The novel carrying handle arrangement can also be employed in bags or sacks with only one block closure and another closure arrangement at the other bag or sack end.

I claim:

1. A bag of flexible sheet material comprising, in its empty or folded flat condition two generally parallel side walls and ablock closure formed of sheet material located at least at one end of the bag and folded into two halves along a central line, said two halves being located between said side walls and having edges parallel to said central fold line connected to the side walls along two parallel spaced apart folds, a carrying handle arrangement at said one end of the bag comprising two U-shaped carrying handles attached to the opposite side walls of the bag outside of each of said closure halves, the free ends of the limbs of each U-shaped handle being attached to the associated side wall adjacent the block closure, the base of each U forming a hand grip part of each carrying handle parallel with said folds and the two handles being directly opposite each other.

2. The bag of claim 1 wherein the parts of the side walls adjoining said bottom folds are reinforced in the zone of the carrying handles by internally attached reinforcing flaps.

3. The bag of claim 1 wherein the parts of the side Walls adjacent said bottom folds are reinforced in the zone of the carrying handles by externally attached reinforcing flaps which cover said free ends of the limbs of said handles.

4. The bag of claim 1 which comprises a plurality of plies of flexible sheet material wherein the plies are joined to each other at spaced apart spots in the zone of the carrying handles.

5. The bag of claim 4 wherein said plies are of synthetic thermoplastic material and are joined to each other at said spaced apart spots by spot welding.

6. The bag of claim 4 wherein said plies are of paper and are joined to each other at said spaced apart spots by spot adhesion.
