Description

S. .D-fPINKHAM.
mp- No. 35,039. Patented April 22, 1862.
N. PETERS. mulho n her. Wahin mn. D.C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SUSAN D. llNKHAM, Oh FOND DU LAC, \YISCONSIN.
VENTILATOR FOR PETROL-OIL LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,039, dated April 22, 1862.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SUSAN D. PINKHAM, of Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Preventing Fluid-Lamps from Bursting; and I do declare that the flame as it issues thence is caused to that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letter; of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the upper part of a lamp or burner with an aperture in which I insert a tube or pipe, made of metal or other substance, which allows of an unobstructed connection of the air outside with the oil inside the lamp, and also admits the escape of any gas which may accumulate in the lamp, while in use, at a distance greater or less from the blaze, as circumstances indicate, and in such a manner as to prevent ignition therefrom, and also to prevent an excessive flow of fluid occasioned by capillary attraction for want of proper ventilation.
To enable others more fully to comprehend the character of my invention, I will give a more definite description of its construction and operation.
I construct a lamp in any of the known forms, using any one or more of the various burners in use, I make an opening in the top of the lamp or burner, as shown at A in the accompanying drawing, and in this opening I insert a tube or pipe, as shown atB, securing it in its place by soldering or otherwise. By means of this tube afforded an easy and safe escape for gaseous matter, and ventilation, which is indispensable to safety, and the perfect use, as an illuminator, of the petrol oil. The same result maybe produced by means of an inverted cup, represented in the accompanying drawing, as shown at O, or by a plate, as shown at D, either of which may be soldered or otherwise fastened to the burner or burners.
I am aware that lamps have been made with holes in their top for the escape of gas; also, that lamps have been made with a tube or tubes for the purpose of conveying the escaping gas to the flame of the lamp, that it might be there consumed, and thereforeI do not claim them or either of them; but
lVhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the curved tube and inverted cup or disk, with a lamp, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
