IMPROVEMENT lN SWEAT-BANDS FOR HATS.

Be it known that l, VILLIAM BURGYES, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ilats; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully de scribed in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a Vertical and Fi 9 a horizontal section of a hat provided with my invention. Fig. il is a view ot' its leather head-lining as separated from the hatbod My invention has reference to what is termed a self-adjusting l1ead-lining for a hat; and it consists in a peculiar arrangement and combination of an inelastic and liexible band., with the leather flexible or elastic headlining, and an airspace between the lining and the body of the hat.

In the drawings, c exhibits ahat-body, while l) is its self-adjusti ng head-lining7 which is generally tlexile and made of leather, and is sewed at its upper edge to the hat-body. There is a space, d, between the lining and the hatbody, and for the purpose of enabling the lining to accommodate itself to the form or shape of the head on which the hat may be worn, the air-space being also to prevent grease or perspiration from pa-ssing from the lining into the l1at-body. The head-lining, when so made and applied to a hat, is very apt while being worn, or afterward, to become stretched, and particularly when more or less wet with perspiration from the head of a person, in which case the hat becomes either too loose on the head or is worn with discomfort. In order to obviate this diiculty, I combine With the said lining b an inelastic but flexile band, e, which I extend around its outer surface and cemeiit thereto by means of an ndia-rubber or water-proof cement. The band should be arranged as shown in the drawings, and may be made of linen cloth covered with india-rubber to render it water-proof and capable of adhering to the leather lining by what is usually termed india-rubber cement`tl1at is, caoutchouc dissolved in an Aessential oil, such as oil of turpentine.

By the employment of the inelastic iiexile band in connection with the lining made and arranged in the hat, and with respect to an air-space, as specified, the lining will not only be caused to retain its proper sl1ape,but the hat can be worn with niuch more comfort to a person than when the lining is unprovided with the band.

I therefore claim as my invention- The above-described arrangement and combination of the inelastic and tlexile bande, with the head-lining l), and the air-space d, arranged between the l1atbody and head-lim ing, and For the purpose as set forth.
