SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,906, dated March 22,1837.

Be it known that I, .Toi-1N C. TnLrnn, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Palatka, in the county of Putnam, State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Disk Steam-Engines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a central section of a disk-engne embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section thereof at a right angle to Fig. l, the plane of the section being indicated by the line .r it, Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a similar section of the same, the parts being in diiferent position.

illy invention relates to that class of disk steam-engines in which the disks revolve `on their axes in different planes; and the object of my invention is essentially to obtain a dupleit engine of this character, or one capable of producing the effect of two independent engines, without comparatively increasing the number of parts to the engine.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates a cylinder, the body of which is divided into two parts or sections, A A2, which are provided with flanges A, for receiving screwbolts whereby the sections are fastened together. XVithin this cylinder A are three disks, B C C, one of which, B, occupies a central position, and is inclined toward the other or outer disks, C C, which latter are parallel to each other, and are mounted on the ends of independent shafts D D, the axes of which and of the outer disks coincide with each other. The central disk, B, is fitted into a guide groove or recess, E, ou the inner surface of the cylinder, for the purpose of retaining said disk in a fixed inclined plane, and the outer disks, C C, are fitted snugly to the inner surface of the cylinder, while intermediate thereof is a web, G, which serves the purpose of retaining the outer disks a fixed distance apart from each other, and which also forms a piston to be acted on by the steam, as hereinafter described. The guide-groove E :is formed at the junction of the two sections A A2 of the cylinder, where the latter is enlarged in diameter for this purpose, and the web or piston Gis formed on the outer disks, C C, diametric thereto and fiush with the edge or periphery of the disks at both ends. In the central disk, B, is a slot, H, for the passage of the piston Gthrough it, the slot being diametric to the central disk, and being formed by making the disk in two halves or sections, which are united by a eircuniferen tial band, J. On the opposite sides of the pis ton Gr, and axially thereto, are formed segments K K of a cylinder, which are fitted in sockets L L, formed in the opposite edges of the disk-slot H, so that by the engagement of the segments with the sockets there is formed a universal joint or bearing between the piston and the central disk, the effect of which is to insure a fined relation of these parts, at the same time permitting the piston to oscillate in the disk-slot H, as hereinafter described. The inner faces of the outer disks, C C, diverge from the periphery to the center of the disks, forming cones O O, the angle of which corresponds to the angle of inclination of the central disk, B, and both of which are constantly in contact with one of the faces of the central disk in a radial line, one such line of contact being diametrically opposite to the other, and the effect of the cones being to forni two abutments, s s, one on each side of the central disk and concomitant to each of the steam chambers created by the spaces between the central and side disks. On opposite sides of each of the abutments s s the cylinder A is provided with two ports, Q Q, (see Figs. l and 2,) for the induction and eduction of steam to and from the steam-chambers.
`When the engine is to be used, steam is admitted to both steam-chambers through the proper port, and, acting on those portions of the piston G which are exposed in the cham` bers, operates to impart arevolvng motion to the outer disks, C C, together with their shafts, whence such motion may be transmitted to any desired point, the central disk, B, partaking of such mot-ion,while the piston slides laterally back and forth in the disk-'slot H in the ensir ing change of angle or position of the piston, and inasmuch as the force of the steam is exerted at two independent points the effect of two engines is obtained, the least number of parts, moreover, being used to produce such effect, due to the fact that the piston is com- IOO the disk C, having coneshaped inner faces,v
