SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,873, dated March 22, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EDWARD L. Lrnnnnof Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring-Vhietrees; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebeing had tothe accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Thisiuvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in spring-whiflletrees.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of a jointed whifdetree, in combination with a resistance-spring, and in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the 'various parts, all as more fuily hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A A represent two suitable members of a hinge, which are secured together by that class ot' hinge-joint denominated a rule-joint,7 the parts being secured together by a proper bushing, B,which may be either solid or hollow, riveted on each end. Each casting A is provided on its edges with projecting lugs rawhich serve as stops to prevent the parts moving beyond a certain point. In these castings A are itted the whiftietree-arnis C, of wood or other suitable material, and to which the draft force is applied, in the usual manner.
D is a semi-elliptic spring, of any desired construction, and which is banded at its longitudinal center by a band, E, said band be' ing provided with a lug or pin, b, designed to engage with an elongated recess in the adjacent edge of the hinge. The ends of this spring are connected by linksF to the arms C of the whiflietree, said links in their normal positions being at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the whiletree.V

While I have described my device, broadly, as a whifdetree, it is obvious that the construction can readily be applied to either the doubletree or singletree and still be within the spirit of my invention.
The advantages of a spring-whifiietree are so well known it is not deemed necessary to enter into a further description hereof.
Vhat I claim as my invention isl. A springwhifletree constructed in two parts, connected together by a rule-joint provided with Vstops upon both edges thereof', formed by the abutting ends of the members of the hinge, in combinalion with a spring and connectinglinks, substantially as and for the purposes described.
