PATENT JOHN V. SHEVMAKER, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
BARREL-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359.821, dated March 22, 1887,
Applicuti on filed January 29. 1887. Serial No. 225.897.
To all ZL'7L0777/ it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN WV. SHEWMAKER, of Terre IIaute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved BarretOarrier, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 isa plan view of myimproved barrel-carrier with the side bars elevated. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan View with the side bars folded, and Fig. i is a transverse section taken on line a: a: in Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, efficient, and inexpensive device for carrying barrels, boxes, and packages.
My invention consists in a pair of longitudinal bars hinged to a pair of crossbars, the longitudinal bars being concaved at their cen ters and provided with spurs projecting from their inner faces for engaging the sides of barrels, boxes, &c.
To the crossbars A are hinged the longitudinal bars B by means of strap'hiuges a, which are secured. to the upper surface of the cross-bars A and the inner surface ofthelongitudinal bars B, the longitudinal bars B being placed slightly within the ends of the bars A, so that the bars B may be raised up edgewise at right angles to the bars A and supported in that position by abutting against the ends of the bars A; or the bars B may be folded down upon the faces of the bars A. The bars A are made a. little shorter than the barrel or other package to which the carrier is to be applied, and the ends of the bars B are prolonged beyond the bars A, and are rounded to form handles b.
(No model.)
In the center of each bar B is formed a shallow concave notch, e, and the upper edge of each bar is provided with a protecting-covering consisting of a fiat iron bar or piece of hoop-iron, d, secured to the bar B by screws. Each bar B is provided with two spurs, 6, projecting from its inner surface at opposite ends of the notch c.
There are two methods of using my improved barrel-carrier. One consists in laying the barrel upon the carrier in the notches c, with the bars turned up, and carrying the carrier and barrel by grasping the handles 1). The other consists in placing the carrier down over the top of the barrel, with the frame formed of V the bars A B surrounding the barrel, then in clining the upper edges of the bars B inward until the spurs e engage the sides of the barrel, when, by lifting upon the haudies b, the spurs 6 will insert themselves still farther in the material of the barrel, thus insuring a firm hold.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a barrel-carrier, the combination of the bars B, provided with concave notches c and handles 12, formed on the end thereof, and the cross-bars A, hinged to the bars B. sub stantiallyas herein shown and described.
2. In a barrel-carrier, the combination of the bars B, provided with concave notches c,
spurs e, and handles 12, the cross-bars A, and
