UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHENES MISH, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CIGAR-Tl P PROTECTOR.
i SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1\To. 359,358, dated March 15, 1887.
Application filed November 27, 1886. Serial No. 220,098.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, PHENEs MIsH, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Cigar-Tip Protectors; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Myinvention relates to a device for proteeting the tips of cigars; and it consists in the improved tipprotector which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, the figure is a view of a cigar having the protector. l
A is the body of a cigar, and B is the protector or tip, composed of a thin tissue of rubber, which is applied to the nished end, extending a short distance along the cigar and having its extreme point made open, as shown, so that the tip of the cigar projects through it, and when the cigar is to be smoked this tip is cut oft, so that there may be the proper draft through the cigar. The sides of the protector are perforated with a number of small holes, C, through which the cigar is exposed, land by which it is allowed to be somewhat moistened when placed in the mouth .without becoming so softened as to be crushed or made disagreeable for the-smoker. At the same time the flavor of the cigar is more readily observed, and the openings also assist in holding the cigar more rmly, because the teeth will take h old through t-he openings. If the draft of the cigar (No model.)
is not satisfactory, perforations may be made through its outer skin in line with one or more of the holes C, so as to improve the draft. By the use of these mouth-pieces the inconvenience of carrying the ordinary cigar-holder is obviated. At the same time the disagreeable odor of nicotine communicated to the clothing of the smoker carrying such holder is done away with, and but a small percentage is added to the cost of the cigars.
lI am aware that thin imperforated rubber tips or shields applied permanently to the mouth ends of cigars are common, and I am also aware that rubber moutlrpieces for cigars provided with perforations in the'walls of the cigar-receiving portions are' not new, and I do not claim such as my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An exterior envelope or tip made of a thin tissue of rubber fitted permanently to the end of the cigar, so as to leave the point exposed,
and having openings or perforations made through the envelope, by virtue of which the sides of the cigar are rnoistened when it is placed in the mouth, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
' PHENES MISH.
