UNITED STATES PATENT OFrrcE.
JOHNv A. GRUBE, OF CLINTON COUNTY, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR PLACING FUSIBLE PLUGS IN BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,657, dated March 1, 1887.
Application filed November 29, 1856. Serial No. 220,180. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. GRUBE, of the county of Clinton and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Device for Placing Fusible Plugs in Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description This invention relates to a simple, cheap, and durable boiler attachment whereby sott or fusible metal plugs may be inserted Within the crown-plate of a boiler, the object of the invention being to avoid the necessity of entering the fire-box or the boiler for the purpose of applying such plugs.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of the boiler, representing the same as being provided with my improved plug-placing device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the plugplacer, the device being shown in central verti cal section and in connection with the boiler, which is also shown in section. Fig. 3 is a view ofa modified construction, and Fig. 4 is a side view of the plug-placing device.
In thedrawings, 1O representsa boiler of ordinary construction, and 11 the crown plate of such boiler. Within the crown-plate 11 there is formed a threaded aperture arranged to be engaged by a centrally-apertured brass plug, 12, which said plug is made integral with an upwardly-extending tube, 13; or the plug may be engaged by threaded arms 14, that are formed at the lower end of the tube, as shown in Fig. 2.
In order that free circulation of the water may be provided for about the top of the plug 12, the tube 13 does not extend in either case to the plug, but is formed with side arms, between which there are ports 15. The plug 12 is formed with a central tapering aperture arranged to receive a fusible plug, 16.
There is an aperture, 2, in the upper portion of the shell of the boiler, which aperture is normally closed by a plug, 17, the upper end of the tube 13 being just below this aperture.
A ramming rod or bar, 20, is provided for use in connection with the attachment above described.
In placing a fusible plug, as 16, by means of my improved attachment or device the plug 17 is removed, the plug 16 is passed through the aperture 2 and into the upper open end of 5 the tube 13, and allowed to drop, so that it will enter the central aperture of the plug 12, after which it may be driven to place by inserting the rammer 20 within the tube 13, as will be readily understood from the construc tion illustrated in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a tube formed with ports 15, of a centrally-apertured plug carried by the tube, substantially as described.
2. The combination,with a boiler, of a plug, 12, formed with a central aperture, a tube, 13,
formed with ports 15, and connected to the plug 12, and a second plug, 17, arranged to close an aperture above the tube, substantially as described.
JOHN A. GRUBE.
