UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEo GEOEGE srUMr, OE NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN EVAPoRAuNG-PANS FoRisAccHAmNE Lioums.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,844, dated July 8, 186:2.
.ing is Va full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l represents alongitudinal vertical section of my invention, the line ma, Fig. 9, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same, taken in the plane indicated by the line vy y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a double-chambered bed-plate in combination with a double set of C-shaped tubes, which rise from a detachable tube-sheet in the interior of the pan, and which form a double connection between the two chambers of the bedplate in such a manner that steam introduced into one of said eh ambers passes through said C-shaped tubes into the other chamber, and that by the peculiar arrangement of said heating-tubes an extensive heating-surface at diiierent levels of the liquid is obtained, and at the same time the water which may condense in said tubes readily runs off into one or the other of the chambers, and causes no injury to the apparatus by freezing, &c., and, furthermore, all the tubes can be easily cleaned on the outside without breaking any joint whatever, and on the inside by removing the tube-sheet.
vTo enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation with reference to the drawings.
The pan A is made of copper or any other suitable material, and it is provided with a flange, a., at its botttom edge, so thatthe same can be conveniently fastened down upon the bed-plate B by means of screwbolts b, or in any other desirable manner. The pan is open at its bottom, and it is fastened down upon the tube-sheet C, which is inserted between the bed-plate B and the bottom edge or ilange, a, of the pan. The screw-bolts b pass through the flange a., tube-sheet C, and bed-plate B, and suitable packing-pieces introduced between the several surfaces render the joints tight when the bolts Z are screwed up. The
bed-plate B is provided with two longitudinal chambers, D D', and tubes E E', the ends of which are inserted into the tubesheet C, form a connection between the two chambers. rlhe tubes E E are bent in the form of the letter C, and the bends of the tubes E are higher and wider than the bends of the tubes E', so that convenient access can be had tothe outer surfaces of both sets of tubes when it is desired to clean them.
F is the steam-pipe,through which steam is admitted into the chamber D., and this steam passes readily and without obstruction through the tubes E E into the chamber D, and out through the discharge-pipe G. Suitable cocks regulate the current of steam through the apparatus.
The water which may condense in the heating-tubes E E runs down into the chambers D D, whence it may be readily and easily removed, and the condensed water is not permitted to accumulate in theheating-tubes, where it would be liable, particularl y in the cold season,to cause a serious obstruction and to prove injurious to the apparatus. At the same time byA the application of the double set of C- shaped tubes a very extensive heating-surface is obtained, and the heat acts on the surrounding liquid at different levels. so that the contents of' the pan can be brought to and kept at the desired temperature with acomparatively small expenditureof steam.
The tubes E F] are rigidly inserted into the tube-sheet, and consequently there is no joint through which aleakage might take place, and the only joint which has to bekepttight is on the outside, where easy access can be had at all times during the operation of boiling, as well as if the pan is cold. By breaking the joint access can be had to the interior of the chambers D D and of the heating-tubes E E whenever it becomes necessary'to clean the same; and, finally, if any part of the tubesheet or of the heating-tubes should become defective it can easily be repaired, orif after a certain time the tubesheet or heating-tubes should be worn out it can easily be removed and replaced by a new one without disturbing any portion of the pan.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the double-chamtubcsEE, bent at'dif'erenbheightsand at difberod bed-plate B in combination with Jche ferentlwidths, in combination with the pan A, detachable tube-sheet C, double Set of C- as and forbho purposes specified.
shaped heating-tubes E E, and pau A, all GEORGE STUMP. Constructed and operating substantially as A/Vit'nesses: and the purpose shown and described. JAMES LAIRD,
2. The double set of C-shaped heating-I R. GAWLEY.
