PIPE-COUPLING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,624, dated February 15, 1887. Application filed September 23, 1886. Serial No. 214,374. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM PIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Myinvention relates to an improvement in pipe-couplings, the object being to provide a pipe-joint that will confine gas or other fluid under a high degree of pressure Without leakage; and with this end in view my invention consists in clamping leather or other suitable substance about the joint by a suitable means, as will be fully described hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is asectional elevation of my improved pipecoupling constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the circular leather washer or packing detached from the coupling.

To put my invention into practice I construct on one end of the pipe a a bowl, b, such On the other end I form a projecting bead, c, a short distance from the end of the pipe at. I now provide two circular leather washers, d, having a number of radial incisions, 6, formed about the perimeter. These washers d, I place between thejoint of the pipes at and bend a portion at right angles, over which I place a sectional clamp, f, which pinches tightly over the washers d and joint of the pipes a. By this construc'tion and arrangement gas or other substance traveling through a line of pipe under a high degree of pressure is prevented from escaping or leaking at the joints. The leather washers d after a short time adhere to that portion of the pipes a over which" they are placed.

I am aware thatit is very old to employ packing rings or bands clamped about the joints of pipes. I therefore broadly disclaim such devices.
