POCKET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,353, dated February 8, 1887.
Application filed November 27, 1886. Serial No. 220,058. (No modclf ZQ all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs WIEsNER, of Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Olasp-Knife, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which'- Figure 1 is a side elevation of rnyimproved clasp-knife, showing it in the position for being opened. Fig. 2 is a side elevation show- Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the position of the parts of the knife before being locked open. Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the knife-blade and a portion of the handle, showing the stud in the side of the blade, and representing the curved slot in the cheek-plates of the handle for limiting the movements of the blade. Fig. 5 represents in perspective the ends of the cheek-plates of the handle, and in end elevation the pivoted end of the blade. Fig. 6 represents in perspective the fastening-latch of the handle, and Fig. 7 shows in perspective the end of the cheek-piates of one side ofthe handle with the latchoperating spring attached thereto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a knife without a back-spring, in which the blade will be held rigidlyin an open or closed position.
' My invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, as hereinafter more 7 fully described and claimed.
The knifeblade A is provided with a shank, a, of uniform thickness and rounded at the end, and furnished with an aperture, 1), for receiving the pivotal screw 1) of the knife, and the studs 0 c, projecting from opposite sides of the shank at diametrically-opposite sides of the aperture b, and at equal distances from said aperture. The cheek-platesd d are provided with apertures e c, for receiving the screw 1), upon which the blade A is pivoted, and in the said cheek-plates are formed semicircular slots ff, for receiving the studs 0 c, projecting from opposite sides of the knife-blade.
The cheek-plates d d are provided with the usual bolsters, g g, and are furnished with checks h h, of wood, ivory, or other suitable material. The cheek-platedis provided with a movable end piece, 2', having a shank, j, which slides in a groove in the inner surface of the check 71/, and is provided with a slot, k, which receives the screw Z, passing through the cheek d and screwed into the cheek h, and serving the double purpose of holding the cheek and of limiting the motion of the end piece, z. The side of the end piece,i,adjoining the cheek-plate d is provided with an oblong cavity, m, for receiving thespringn, attached to the outer surface of'the cheek-plate, and bearing against one of the walls of the cavity m, tending to push the end piece, 2', toward the cheek h.
The end piece, z, is provided with an arm, 0, projecting from its inner face at right angles and furnished with a T-shaped head, which is received in a recess, p, of corresponding form, in the end of a distance-piece, q, secured to the cheek-plate d. The distance-piece q extends along the rear edge of the cheek-plate d,in the position usually occupied by the backspring of an ordinary clasp-knife.
When it is desired to open the clasp-knife, the movable end piece, 2', is pushed outward, withdrawing the T-headed arm 0 from the recessp, when the check-plate d and parts attached thereto are turued, with the screw 12 as a pivot, until the edge of the cheek-plate at the end of the slot f is brought into engagement with the stud c, projecting from the side of the shank of the knife-blade, when by the con tinued forward movement of the cheek-plate d the knife-blade will be turned, together with the cheek-plate, until the stud cstrikes the edge of the plate d at the end of the slot f, p when the knife will be in its open position, and may be fastened by allowing the T-h eaded arm 0 of the end piece, i, to slip into the recess p, and thus lock the cheekplate with the studs 0 c at the ends of the slots f f.
The knife is closed by disengaging the T- 5 headed arm 0 from the recess 10 in the distance-piece q and reversing the operation just described. I
Having thus fully described my invention, I pressed sliding end piece provided with the claim as new and desire to secure by Letters T-headedarm, and the recessed distancepiece, IO Patentsubstantially as shown and described.
The springless clasp-knife comprising the 7 j 5 kniFe-blade provided with studs 011 opposite JULIUS IESNER' sides of its shank arranged at diametrically- Witnesses: opposite sides of its pivot, the cheek-plates CHAS. S. SEEOE, provided with semicircular slots, the spring- XV. '1. STEVENS,
