SPECIFICATION forming 'part of Letters Patent No. 357,333, dated February 8, 1887.

Y1o claimed in Letters Patent No. 221,606, granted to me the 11th day of November, A. D. 1879, the main objects of thepresent invention being, first, to so connect the adjusting-screw and the regulator-lever that there will be no side-play at the point'of connection, and, second, to so arrange the connection between the adjustingscrew and the lever employed to move said screw that all danger of accidental displacement of said screw, and consequently of the '2o regulator-lever to which it is attached, will- 'be avoided.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar iigures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure lis a plan View of a watch-plate provided l, with my improved adjusting attachment. Fig.
2 is an enlarged inverted plan view of the strip from which the clamp employed to hold 3o the screw to the regulator-lever is formed, the strip being represented as it appears before being bent to the required form. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view o1' my adjusting attachment, representing the same as secured to the extending end of the regulating-lever, the watchplate and the graduated segmental plate with which the screw engages being shown in section. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan View of the attachment, and Fig. 5 is a sectional View 4o taken on the line as :v of Fig. 3.
Referring, now, briefly to the construction illustrated in the drawings, 10 is the watchplate, 1l the bridge, and 12 the regulator-lever, which is connected to the bridge in the ordinary manner, and extends partially over the face of a graduated segmental plate, 13, that is fixed to the watch-plate. The balancespring, which is not shown in the drawings, is mounted and connected to the regulator-lever 5o in the ordinary manner, and in order that the proper tension may be given to said spring the lever 12 is moved forward or back over the face of the plate13, and this regulationof the tension of the balance-spring may, with the attachment which I am about to describe, be adjusted to the greatest nicety.
The regulating attachment consists, essentially, of a screw or worm, 20, that is formed with a groove or channel, 2, and an annular iiange, 3, which extends from one side and constitutes the head of the screw. The screw 20 is secured to the lever l2 by a clamp, 30, which is made from a strip of metal in which there are cut three apertures, as shown at 5, 6, and 7 in Fig. 2, the sides of the strip being cut in an appropriate manner to form leaves or wings S, which iit within the groove or channel 2 of the screw 20; but as the distance between the outer faces of said leaves or wings is slightly greater than the width of the groove or channel 2, the leaves have to be slightly compressed, in order that they may be placed in position within the groove, but when once i-n position they will bear against the sides of the groove and prevent all side-play or lateral movement of the screw.
In connecting the lever 12 and the screw 2O the strip constituting the clamp 30 is bent so that the apertures 6 and 7 will be in substantially the same line, while the end of the strip in which the aperture 5 is formed is bent over in hookrform, as best shown in Fig. 3. The end of the lever 12 is passed through the apertures 6 and 7, the screw 20 being placed at this time so that the end of the lever 12 will pass through the channel or groove 2, the lever being slightly bent at a point near its end. The point of the lever is then passed through the aperture 5 and the clamp -forced upward upon the lever 12 to such a position that the screw 20 will rest within athreaded groove, 9, formed upon the upper inner edge of the segmental plate 18, the parts-that is, the clamp, the screw, and the lever 12--being held in the desired position by frictional contact; or, if desired, the clamp may be formed with a threaded aperture, through which there may be passed a set-screw, 21, which would bear against the under side of the lever 12.
In order that a proper adjustment of the lever 12 may be obtained by the turning of the screw 20, 1 make a number of apertures, 4, in the iange 3; but these apertures are arranged within the outer face of the flange, Vandwhen ICO it is desired to turn the screw 20 to adjust the lever a common pin or any other proper implement is inserted in one of the apertures and forced forward, so as to move in a line substantially parallel with the central longitudinal Alinerof the lever, all side-thrust, such as would be necessary with apertures or recesses extending to the outer face of the flange, being avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a regulator-lever, of a channeled screw and a clamp formed with spring-leaves fitting within the channel of said screw, substantially as shown and described.
