SAW-GUNIMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357.336, dated February 8', 1867.
i Application filed July 28, i886, Serial No. 209.208. '(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ELI ROGERS, residugin' the county of Fulton, and theStateof Indiana, have i'nvented anew and Improved Saw-Grummer, of which the following'is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved saw-glimmer which is simple in construction, durable, and effective in operation.
'The invention consists of a cam-lever operating a springarm, on which is pivoted a toolholder. r
The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of `this specication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal cross-section of the same on the line a: 00 of Fig. 2. i
The base-plate A is secured to a table or bench, B, and is provided with a horizontal arm, A', on which are mounted the'standards A2, to the upper ends of which is .pivoted a lever, C, having a cam, D, which isin contact with thefront end of the arm E, pivoted on the standard F, and held in contact with the cam D by the spring G, fastened to the said standard F, which is adjustable on the arm A'.,
To the front end of the pivoted arm E is pivoted a tool-holder, H, having an exten` sion, H', which is guided in the plate I, adjustable on the under side of the horizontal arm A. A gum'ming-tool, J, is secured to the arm H, and its rear end rests onthe extension H.
The die-plate K is secured to the front part of the horizontal arm A', which is also pro vided with the cross-pieces L, on each of which is pivoted a saw-rest, M. The standards A2 are additionally supported in front by the brace A3, secured to the arm A'.
On the base-plate A is also mounted a sawset, N, which consists of a frame, O, on which is pivoted a guide'lever, P, having an offset or tool, P', which forms the tool for setting the saw. l,Ou the frame O is secured the anvilplate Q, having an arm, Q', directly under the tool P', and the saw-rest R is pivoted to the frame O, and is held at any desired angle by the `screw S, which screws on the frame O. On the upper bent ends, O', of the frame O screw the set-screws U.
The operation is as follows: The saw to be gummed is placed on the die-plate K, and is supported at its outer end on each side of the machine by the saw-rests M. The cutting lower edge of the tool J is held above the dieplate K by the action of the spring G on the ,pivoted arm E, so as to permit the operator to place thevsaw in the desired position under the tool J, the front edge of the saw-blade resting against the projection H'.y The operator now moves the lever G forward and downward in the direction of the arrow a', whereby the cam D acts on the pivoted arm E and presses the same downward, which causes the tool J to cut the saw-blade to `form the tooth. The operator then moves the lever G to its former position and the compressed spring G forces the arm E to swing upward, and thus places the tool-holder H and its tool J again in the original position, as shown in Fig. 2. The saw is then moved the desired distance across the dieplate K, so as to form the next tooth, and the above operation is repeated.
If it is desirable to gum ciicular saws the brace A3 is removed and the saw-rests M are swung forward to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, so as to form a better support for the circular saw. Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asv new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i I. In a sawgun1mer, the combination, with a cam-lever, of aswinging arm, aspring pressing against said arm, and a toolholder pivoted to the said arm, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a saw-gummer, the combination, with a cam-lever, Of a swinging arm pivoted to an adjustable standard, a spring operating on said arm, a tool-holder pivoted on the said arm and having an extension, and a guide-plate for the said extension, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a saw-gommer, the combination, with a cam-lever, of a swinging arm, a spring press- IOO ing against said arm, a tool-holder pivoted on said arm, a gumming-tool attached to the said holder, and a die-plate secured to the main frame, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a saw-glimmer, the combination, with aGaIn-lever, of aswinging arm, a spring pressing against said arm, a tool-holder pivoted on thesaid arm and havingan extension, a guideplate for` the said extension, a gnmlning-tool fastened to the said holder, and a stationary die-plate secured to the main frame, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a saw-gulnmer, the base-plate A, the horizontal arm A', secured to the said baseplate, the standards A2, fastened on the said Witnesses:
JOSEPH S. NEELY, J Aicon HOFFMAN.
