lJNrrsn STATES PATENT Grinch".
\VILL P. DAHL, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
GAS-PLIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,241, dated January 18, 1887.
Application filed November 2, 1886. Serial No. 217,802. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILL P. DAHL, of Minneapolis, in the county of'Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Pliers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to pliers; and it consists, essentially, of a combination-tool embodying pliers having variously-sized jaws applicable for use in connection with Varying parts of a gas-fixture, a wire-cutting attach ment, a lava-tip-turning attachment, a band adapted for use in the cleaning of the slots of the lava tips, a screw-driver, and a stop-cock or valve-turning recess.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the Views.
Figure 1 is aside View of my improved form of pliers, a portion of one of the lever armsor handles being shown in section to disclose the arrangement of the lava-tip-clcaning strip, the pliers in Fig. 1 being represented as they appear when opened. Fig. 2 is a side view of the pliers, representing them as they appear when closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one section of the pliers; and Fig. 4 is a view of the inner face of one of the lever arms or handles of the pliers, representing the lavatip cleaner as it appears when arranged within a recess formed within said arm.
In the drawings above referred to, 10and 11 represent the two sections of the pliers, said sections being united by a rivet or bolt, 12, the central joint being made in the ordinary well-known way. The jaws 13 and 14 are each formed with concave serrated recesses 2 and 3, the recesses of each jaw being arranged to register, as shown in Fig. The recesses 3 are provided for use upon the burners proper, while the recesses 2 are arranged for turning the globe andfixture screws.
In the extreme end of each j aw there is formed a serrated recess, 4, back of which there is a semicircular flange, 5, and between the flange 5 and the recess 2there is a. plain-faced recess, 6, the recesses 6 being so formed and proportioned that when serrated faces of the recesses 4 are brought into engagement with the tops of the burners the lava tips carried by the burners will pass upward through the central ers are open to the position in which they are shown in Fig.1 and awire is introduced within the slots 9 when the pliers are closed the wire will be caught between the cutting-edges 8,and will consequently be sheared or cut in two.
As the handles of the pliers approach the pivot pin or bolt 12 theyare cut out, so that their edges 16 will be parallel when the jaws of the pliers are brought together, thus providing for the reception of the thumb-piece or handle of the stop-cock or valve of the gasfixture, thereby enabling the operator to secure a sufficient amount ofleverage to turn any stop-cock or valve that may happen to become bound.
The rear end of one of the handles is pro vided with a projecting point, 17 which is arranged for use as ascrew-driver. This screwdriver will be found convenient in removing or loosening the nut under the core.
.In connection with the parallel face 16,in the inner face of the other handle of the pliers I arrange a recess, 18, across which there is secured a retaining band or plate, 19, and in this recess 18 I mount a spring-strip, 20, which is provided with a handle or knob, 21, the arrangement being such that the strip may be forced outward in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1, and so constitute an attachment for the pliers, which may be used to clean out the slits or slots of the lava tips.
Such an implement as Ihave described will be found to be exceedingly convenient and useful in the fitting of gas-fixtures, and as each section of the pliers may be madein the same die the cost of manufacture is reduced to a minimum.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, gaspliers formed with transverse recesses 2, 3, and 6, longitudinal recesses4,and cross-flanges 5, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, pliers formed with serrated recesses 2 and 3, a serrated recess, 4, a recess, 6, arranged between the recesses 2 and 4, and slots 9, having cutting-edges S, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, pliers formed with recesses 2, 3, 4, and 6, slots 9, and I0 parallel faces 16, andprovided with a springstrip, 20,thab is mounted Within a recess formed in one of the handles of the pliers, substantially as described.
