HEATING ATTACHMENT FOR COOKlNG-STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,208, dated December 28, 1886.
Application filed July I), 1885.
To all whom it may concern;
- ing Stoves,of which the following is a description.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a stove provided with my attachments. Fig. 2 is a plan view partly in horizontal section, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the line 3 y of Fig. 1.
The object of my invention is to provide a meansfor converti ng cooking-stoves and ranges into hot-air and ventilating stoves, so as to utilize them for the double purpose of cooking and heating the rooms above; and it consists in the peculiar construction of a heating-chamber in combination wit-h the stove, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, A represents the cookingstove, and B represents the heating-chamber to be attachedthereto. This heating-chamber is a rectangular upright inclosure of sheet metal of about the height of the stove,divided into smoke and fire fines and pure hot-air compartments, as follows: 0 is an upper, and O a lower, air-space formed within the outer casing by the smoke-drums b and b,and the communicating vertical smoke pipes b". The smokedrums b and b are of less width than the outer casing, (see Fig. 3,) and this allows the air-spaces G and O to communicate with the space around the pipe b To the sides of the casing about its middle are attached deflecting shelves Oflwhich extend inwardly toward each other, but leave a space between. The airspace G has an opening, d, in its bottom, through which it receives fresh air from the outside,and the chamberOat the top has apipe-. connection,d,by which the air which has been heated is delivered to the hot-air fines, which carry the hot air to the points of utilization above.
The stove A has on its rear side the connections a and a, which communicate with the smoke-chamber above and below the oven, which connections are adapted to fit closely the openings in the side of chambers b and b, and the upper one, I), of which chambers communicates with the exit smoke-pipe If, that Serial No.171,150. -(1\*0 model.)
the pure air which is brought into external These chambers Z2 and b and b serve to heat.
contact with them as follows: This pure air enters opening (1 in the bottom of chamber 0, and passes thence around the sides of the smokechamberp, then is diverted across the lower portion of fines b by the shelves Ciand passing up between them crosses the flues b at the top in an outward dircction,and thence passes up on the outside of chamber 1) to the hot-chamber O, and thence through pipe d to the point of utilization. The fresh air admitted through opening (I at the bottom is made to travel a winding course over the fire-heated surfaces and becomes thereby thoroughly heated.
From the cool-air chamber 0 a. pipe,D, with damper D extends to the front of the stove, and ascending to the fire pot communicates with a space at the end of the fire-pot opposite the door, as shown at A, Fig. 2, and which space communicates with a space, A between the fire-back and oven, and from which the heated air passes out through a pipe, A into the room.
D is a dip-pipe of trap shape, which de scends from the draft-space of the stove nearly to the floor, and which supplies air for combustion, taking it from the lowest stratum in the room, where the air is cold and impure. This pipe D has a damper, D", in the same to regulate the draft. The object of the trap or drop down this pipe, and prevent the same from falling down upon and setting fire to the floor.
I do not in this application claim, broadly, the trap-shaped pipe for supplying air to the combustion-chamber, nor yet the particular construction as shown for connecting the pipe with such chamber, as such invention is bend in this trap is to catch live coals that may ICO claimed in a separate application for patent I a of the stove, and connecting smoke-pipes b, filed by me on or about November 23, 1886, arranged within the outer case, substantially Serial No. 219,701. asand for the purpose described. 15 Having thus described my invention, what I 2.
