FRANCES E. ELLER, OF FAIRMONT, NEBRASKA.
COMBINED BLACKBOARDAND PERFORATED DESK-TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,154, dated June 8, 1886. Application filed November 4, 1885. Serial No.1SLE38. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCES E. ELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairmont, in the county of Fillmore, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Ghilds Educator and Desk-Top; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exnot description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention consists of a device, hereinafter described, to aid and facilitate the teaching of children in the primary schools and at home, and to entertain and amuse themselves.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention and apart of the perforated board and of the box. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, cut on the line x 00. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the stops.
My invention is described as follows: Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a board, having rows of perforations B,whioh run in straight lines up and down and across the same. 0 is a box attachedto the upper edge of said board. Said box has a part-ition, D, which divides the box in two parts. The box is provided withasliding lid,E,which works in the grooves F. G is a slate, fitted to the right-hand end of said perforated board, and to thelower edge of the extended arm H of said board. I is a piece of rabbeted molding, which-runs along the lower edge of said board and slate. Kisapieceofdouble-rabbeted molding, the lower end of which is fitted into the edge of the molding I, and the other end to the extended arm H of said board, the lefthand rabbet extending over the right-hand edge of said slate, and the right-hand rabbet extending over the left-hand edge of the adjoining perforated board L, similar to the board A. M is a stop, having asmall end, m, adapted to fit in the perforations B in said board. These stops M are made of various bright colors, and the head may represent letters or other designs.
This invention is designed to be attached to the top of desks ortables, and one, two,or more may be attached to the same table. When used in public schools, one made on a much larger scale may be used by the teacher in the nature of a blackboard. g
The educator is used as follows: The brightcolored stops M are placed in the perforations B, by the direction of the teacher or by the child itself, in such a manner that they will form letters, words, sentences, figures, or designs, &c., all of which may be varied in colors. The box is to hold the stops, pencils, &c. The slate is to be used in connection with the other part of the educator for drawing and writing Upon. The rabbeted moldings are to secure the Said board and slate to the desktop, and to prevent the stops, pencils, 850., from rolling off.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
l. The educator consisting of the board A, having the extended arm H, and perforations B, stops M, adapted to fit in said perforations, box 0, attached to the upper edge of said board, slate G, fitted to the right-hand side of 7 5 said board, and rabbeted moldings I and K,
substantially as shown and described, and for
