MEDICINE-BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,837, dated June 1, 1886.
Application filed September 30, 1885. Serial No. 178,603. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Beit known that I, BERNARD G. OLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Medicine-Bottles, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
Thisinvention relates to an improvement in medicine-bottles; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction of the same, whereby the liquid contained therein may be dropped with certainty or measured in any desired quantity, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a section of the bottle, showing the manner of measuringliquid in quantities; and Fig. 3 represents the manner of dropping the medicine.
c represents a bottle such as is commonly used to contain medicines, and of any desired size. This bottle is formed with a neck, a', rather longer than is usual, and has marked upon it in any way found most desirable a series of graduations, b, the purpose of which will'be presently shown.
Vithin the neck of the bottle is placed, at its base, a web or washer, c, of rubber, cork, or other elastic material, having a small open. ing, c', through its center, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. rlhis partition or web is preferably made of elastic material, because it is more readily removed and replaced, and more surely retains its position when in use, and, if desired, the bottle may be formed with a small shoulder, upon which the web rests to prevent its being pushed entirely within the bottle. A cork or stopper, d, is provided of suicient length to entirely fill the neck of the device when pushed in.
In practice the vial is first filled with medicine and the web pushed down to its place.
hen medicine is to be given, if gaged by drops, the cork is removed, the vial inverted, and the liquid slowly passes out at the opening c in the web and flows off in drops,which are readily counted without any liability of merging them into a steady stream, as is often the case when the plain bottle is used. If the medicine is to be given or gaged by a teaspoonful or other measure of greater quantity than above described, to drop it would require too much time, and in that case the cork is drawn out to a given mark upon the neck, as iu Fig. 2, and when the vial is inverted the small chamber in the neck between the stopper and the web iills with the liquid, which is the exact quantity desired. The cork is then removed and the liquid thus measured allowed to escape into any receptacle, by which it is administered to the patient. The opening in the web being small, it will be found that after the neck has been filled, the liquid will not return to the main body of the vial, even if the latter is again placed in an upright position, and it is therefore easy to gage the exact quantity of liquid to be given, a point which is often of the greatest imf portance.
The graduations upon the vial may of course be made to representany desired quantity-as a dram, a teaspoonful, &c.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bottle a, having its neck provided with a series of graduations, b, and the stopper d, of sufficient size to entirely iill the neck, in combination with a removable partition, c, placed at the base of the neck and formed of elastic material, having a small central opening, c', substantially as and vfor the purpose d'escribed.
