LAST-SUPPORTING JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,062, dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed September 29,1885. Serial No. 17H,571. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY STOCKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Last-Supporting Jacks, ofwhich the following-is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to jacks for supporting shoe-makers lasts; and the novelty consists in the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention may be briefly stated to be the provision of various adjustabilities and interchangeabilities in the parts, whereby, first, the article upon the last may be readily thrown into various positions for convenience to the operator; and, second, the jack, by certain simple changes, may be quickly adapted to eithera reversible iron last or a wooden last at will.
I provide,in connection, a base which is secured to the table or bench, a hinged subbase which supports the last-h0ldingjack,and
' means for conveniently adjusting and locking said sub-base at any desired point, and the sub-base turning on its hingepivot. In addition to this adjustment,I provide that thejackbody shall be loosely secured to this sub-base, so as to turn freely upon a central'pivot, the latter plane of motion being at right angles to that of the sub-base, whatever be the relation of said sub-base to the horizontal plane of the stationary base. I secure the jack-body at any desired point of adjustment by novel and important means, which allow the necessary changes to be made easily and instantly.- The jack, thus turning on two centers, is adapted to serve with a reversible last of the class set forth in my application Serial No. 173,240; but in the present invention I provide additional devices, which, used in connection with thejack-body, convert the same into a device for holding a wooden last. These additional devices are readily removable and materially modify the capacity of the jack.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a jack embodying my improvements and provided with a reversible metal last. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the jack, the last removed therefrom. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line :0 a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the upper sub-base supporting the jack body. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the base to which said sub-base is attached. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line y 3 through the base, sub-base, and lower part of jack-body. Referring to the drawings, A designates the stationary base, having means, a, by which it is secured to any convenient table or bench, and to this base A is hinged at b the sub-base B. In the center of the base A is a slot, a, in which is received a curved bar, 0, made in the form of a segment upon the arc of a circle having the pivot of the hinge b for a center. Guides a receive a locking pin or screw, 0, which serves to lock the bar 0 at any desired point of adjustment, and the bar 0 has a rectangular head, c, which fits into a recess, 1), formed in the under face of the sub-base B, a threaded shank, c, passing up through said sub-base, and serving to lock the jack-body D thereto, as will presently appear.
The base A and sub-base B are so adapted to each other as to fold closely together-that is to say, the guides a of the part A are re ceived within recesses in the subbase B, and the lockingbar G, which moves with the subbase, passes through the slot a of the base A,
and through its supporting-bench. The pin screwed down to depress the lever the toe of or set-screw C also operates in a recess formed partly in each of the parts A B.
Upon the upper face of the sub-base B is a circular guide, I), having the aperture b which receives the threaded arm a of the locking or adjusting bar 0 for a center. This guide b is received in a circular recess, (1, formed in the lower face of the base D of the jack-body D, and this recess d has for its center an aperture, d, in said base, which also receives the threaded arm 0' of the adj ustingbar 0. The upper face of the base D is provided with adouble can], d,which corresponds with a similar cam-face, f, formed on a levernut, F, as shown.
The arm a of theadjusting-bar 0 works loosely through both apertures b and d,- but the parts D and B may be closely clamped together by means of the frictional engagement of the cam-faces d and f, which may be accomplished by simply throwing the handle of the lever-nut F in the proper direction.
The movable jack-body D comprises the base D, the toestandard D having transverse rib m, the pin m and the standard d, having the aperture These parts are shown in the application hereinbefore mentioned; but in the present invention the parts have additional and important functions, as will be seen. The pin 00 is received in the socket g of the reversible last G, while the aperture it receives the clamp g. I may in this invention dispense with the clamp g and use a screw, as seen at g", and still have an important function for the aperture m.
As thus far described, it will be observed that the base B may be adjusted in one direction back and forth and locked in desirable location at will, and the jack has independ' ent adjustment in another plane and means for looking it at any desired point at will, the base turning upon the pivot b, and the jack turning in adirection at right angles thereto uponthe arm 0'. The last, being held upon the standards D D, as described, may by theseindependent adjustments be thrown into various positions to operate upon the work.
This device is useful and-supplies a want; but I enlarge the scope of its usefulness by the devices which I will now describe. I
Within the aperture w (the clamp 9 having been removed) of the standard D", I journal a lever, H, having asquared portion, h, which is received in a similar aperture, 2', formed in a swinging stud, I, having a pin, i, which fits into and holds a wooden or other last, J. The lever-arm of the part H has a slot, h, which receives a threaded bolt, K, and a thumbnut, is, serves to depress the lever. These parts are so proportioned and arranged relatively to each other that when the thumb nut k is loosened the last J may be readily placed upon the pin 1', and when the said nut is the" last will be thrown upon any suitable support to lock the last firmly in place.
L designates a removable frame or casting having a sleeve, l, which receives the stand ard D and a slot, l, in said sleeve, whichreceives the rib at, to prevent the casting L from turning. Upon the parallel sides of the body of this casting I engage the jaws M of a toerest, M, and bya pinching-screw, m, I adjust this toe-rest upon the casting to accommodate difi'erent lengthsof last. Now, it will be observed that, a last having beenengaged upon the pin 1" and the lever H depressed by screwing down the nut k, the toe of the last will be held forcibly upon the toe-rest M, and by means heretofore described the said last may be held firmly in various positionsalso may either hold the clamp g, or it may be the journal-bearing of the lever H. The several parts are removable and readily interchangeable, while the adjustments mentioned as belonging to the jack are equally applicable to either form given to the'device in use.
In details of construction modifications may be made within wide limits without'depart" ing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of my invention, the essential features of which have been given.
The subject-matter of claim 4 herein is shown but not claimed in another application I filed by me November 25, 1885, No. 183,956.

means, substantially as described, for lock-' ing said'base at any desired point of adjust ment, of level F, fitting over the upper end of the locking-bar C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. r
2. The combination, with the base A, having guides a and slot a, of the hinged subbase B, having central aperture, b, and guide b, the segmental bar 0, pin 0', and last-supporting jack, as set forth.
