SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,578, dated September 21, 1886.
Application filed March 6, 1886. Serial No.194,300. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, THOMAS G. FLEMING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hair over, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stanchions, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in stanchions; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

A represents a suitable frame or support, which is located at the head of the stall, and B represents the stanchion, which is pivoted vertically therein.
a represents the lower head-block, secured between parallel horizontal bars m m, to one of which bars is secured the lower end of a vertical bar, I), which extends to the upper headblock, 0, where it is secured between the parallel bars n it. These upper and lower headblocks, a c, extend or project beyond their respective bars m m and n n, so that the latter and the frame are prevented from coming in contact with the outer stationary frame, A, and binding upon the same, as will be readily understood, and the upper head-block, c, is also secured or clamped between the parallel bars 01 n. The bar m of the lower head-block is longer than the bar m, and to the extended end of the bar m is secured a rigid brace-bar, d, which has its upper end secured to the bar n of the upper head-block. A small block, 0, is secured between the outer ends of the bars a n, to close the space between the bars and prevent displacement of a pivoted bar, e, hereinafter described. This bar e-is pivoted at its lower end between the bars m m at a suitable distance from the bar I), and has its upper end working in the space between the bars anf designates a latch which is pivoted between the bars a n, and having its engaging end notched to rest upon a cutout portion of the block 0. The pivoted bar 6 fits in the space between the block a and the shoulder forming the notch of the latch f, so that should any lateral pressure he applied to the bar e the latter will act against the shoulder of the latchand serve to force itsinner end down into the frame A, as hereinbefore described. Vertically aligned pivot-bolts 9 pass through the head-blocks a 0 into the frame-A, and thereby permit the stanchion to freelyturn on the said frame. By tripping the latch f the upper end of the pivoted bar 6 is disengaged, and the said 6 5 bar may then be swung into the position shown in Fig. 2.

I lay special claim onthe fitting of the small head-blocks-a 0 between parallel bars, and projecting outward from'the bars, as by that means the bars are retained at a proper distance from the frame A and all possibility of the stanchi on binding is obviatet Having thus described my invention, I claim A stanchion comprising the bars n n, the head-block c, fitted between the bars, in combination with the bars m m, the block a, fitted. between the bars or m, both of said blocks a 0 being extended outward from their respect ive bars, and having holes for the passage of pivotal bolts, the vertical bar b, connecting one end of the bars in m a n, the rigid bracebar (Z, connecting the other end of bars m n, 9; the latch-bar e, pivoted at its lower end between the bars m m and working at its upper end between the bars a n, and alatch,f,'ei1- gaging with the latch-bar e and resting upon the headblock c, as set .forth.
