Cl. 220-38 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A bin comprises a cover pivotably mounted at the upper end of a pair of supporting members straddling the bin, the lower ends of the supporting members being pivotably mounted to the lower end of the bin, whereby the bin may be partially opened by pivoting the supporting members at their lower ends causing the cover to move in the horizontal direction, and may be completely opened by then pivoting the cover at the upper ends of the supporting members.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the invention The present invention relates to a bin intended to serve as a collecting vessel for town refuse and garbage.

More particularly, the present invention relates to a collecting vessel into which smaller containers holding garbage or town refuse, which accumulate in domestic establishments, can be emptied. These bins are placed at appropriate places in streets and court yards, and householders carry their Smaller containers to the bin and deposit the garbage and refuse therein. Subsequently and at appropriate intervals the municipal garbage collectors take the contents of these bins by emptying it into vehicles which are built for that purpose.

Description of the prior art These bins must be convenient to use in two respects: On the one hand a housewife or another person wishing to throw garbage into such a bin must be able to do this quickly and easily. On the other hand the bin must be designed to be lifted easily and to be tilted upside-down so as to pour its whole contents quickly into the body of the collecting vehicle. Furthermore the bins must have an appropriate cover or lid so as to prevent bad odors from escaping and also to bar access of flies to the contents. This is especially important in warm climates.

In order to meet these requirements, the cover has to be of certain weight and must be solidly built to fit onto the bin and not to be bent or otherwise damaged during use. Thus, it is not easy for a person to lift it, possibly to hold it in the lifted position, while at the same time emptying a pail or bucket or some other smaller container into the bin.

In order to solve this problem, it has already been suggested to sub-divide the cover into several parts which are hingedly connected with one another, so as to give a person the possibility of lifting one portion of the cover --leaving the others in place-and emptying the bucket or pail through the so-obtained smaller opening into the bin. For emptying the bin the whole cover, which in turn is hingedly connected to the bin itself, is swung off or lifted, as the case may be.

This arrangement has its advantages, but there are some inherent drawbacks: While opening and reclosing a portion of the cover it is unavoidable that this hinged part when closing causes noise which is objectionable, especially in the early morning hours or during hours of rest. Moreover it has happened that persons holding up 3,490,642 Patented Jan. 20, 1970 SUMMARY OF THE PRESENT INVENTION According to the present invention, there is provided a bin having a cover characterized in that the cover is pivotably mounted to the upper end of a pair of supporting members straddling the bin, the lower end of said supporting members being pivotably mounted to the lower end of said bin, whereby the bin may be partially opened by pivoting said supporting members at their lower ends causing the cover to move in the horizontal direction, and the him may be completely opened by then pivoting the cover at the upper end of said supporting members.

Further features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the description below.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING The invention is herein described, by way of example only, with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing illustrating a bin in side elevational view in accordance with the invention.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT With reference to the annexed drawing, the bin 1 has a lid or cover 2 which latter fits tightly on top of it. It is provided, as usual with bins of this kind, with wheels or castors 3. At the bottom of the bin there are provided two outwardly extending pins 4 on each of which can swing a bar or rod 5 which in turn is connected pivotally at 6 to the lid 2. The cover has a handle 7 which permits its being shifted.

In order to deposit garbage in the bin, it is not necessary to lift off the whole cover. Thus the latter is pushed back in the direction of the arrows a. In doing this the bars 5 straddling the bin are swung into the position indicated by dash-dotted lines while the cover itself assumes the position indicated at the right hand side of the drawing also in dash-dotted lines. In order to reclose it, the cover 2 is simply pulled back as indicated by the arrow b.

In order to empty the bin, after having lifted and tilted it upside down by known means, with the bars Sin the position indicated by the dash-dotted lines, the cover 2 is swung about the pivots 6 into the position indicated by the dotted lines. In this position the whole contents of the bin can be poured out and easily deposited into the collecting vehicle.

The bin may be of any suitable shape, such as cylindrical, frusto-conical or prismatic.

Preferably, as shown in the drawing, the bars 5 are pivotably mounted at their lower ends at the bottom of the bin on an axis located substantially three-fourths the distance from the front edge to the rear edge of the bin. Pivoting the bars 5 at their lower ends will thus cause the cover 2 to move horizontally to open about one-half the normal opening of the bin. In addition, it is preferable that the cover 2 be pivotably mounted to the upper ends of the bars 5 on an axis located substantially half-way between the front and rear edges of the cover. The cover may thus be easily pivoted to fully open the bin.

Many changes, variations and applications of the illustrated embodiment may be made.
