NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SUSPENDER`S.
SFECEFICATION forming part: of LettersPatent No. 348,100. dated August 24, 1886.
` Application filed November 5, 1R84. Serial No. 147,218. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRI BEAU'DRY, of the city of Montreahin the District of Montreal and Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to that class of suspenders in which the webforming the main or shoulder straps is in onepiece and cross-folded at thc point of junction with the device for connecting the back auxiliary straps, also where the back and front straps themselves are in one piece and folded in like manner.
My invention consists, briefly speaking, iu the combination, with the webbing crossed in a double fold-i. e., in the shape of a V-of a stiffening-wire placed within such fold, and with a hook, loop, or eye projecting from the apex of the fold. Certain details of construction are also embodied in my invention, all of which are hereinafter described, and specifically claimed.
In the accom pan ying drawings, forming part ofthis specification, similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a view showingvrear parts ofthe Suspenders, illustrating fold of shoulder and auxiliary straps and their connections. Figs. 2 and 3 arc perspective views showing one way of folding the web, and Figs. 4 and 5 views illustrating another manner of folding.
Figs. 6, 7, 8, and 9 show different modifications of the wire stiffening device.
Heretofore triangular metal plates have been used in Suspenders for the purpose of stiftening the fold of the web; but in all these of which I am aware the plates have not been thoroughly covered by the'web, and have required to be slotted, and necessitated extra labor in passing the web through these slots, as well as exposing sharp edges to the web, besides involving increased expense in finishing the parts exposed to view. In addition to this a prolongation of the plate has been necessary to form the loop or hook by which connection is made between the shoulder and auxiliary straps, thus involving waste of inaterial. All these objections are overcome by the use of my invention, as, in the first place, the stiffening device may be left in the rough, as it is entirely covered by. the web, and, secondly, the wire loop is easily formed by twisting by. hand, or by suitable machinery.
A A represent the main or shoulder straps of the Suspenders folded oblique] y at the back, in the manner shown in either Figs. 2, 3, or 4, 5, the former being more suitable for the triangular wire stiffenings B, (shown in Figs.
1, 6, and 7,) while I prefer the latter fold for.
the wires shown in Figs. 8 and 9. These triangular stiffenlng devices are incloscd within the folds of the web forming the shoulderstraps, and are fastened therein by turning the ends of the wire around the web, as in Figs. l, 7, 8, andi).
A loop, C, is formed atcone point ofthe triangular stiffening device, and this projects beyond the folds of the web-i. e., from the apex-to which loop a ring, D, is connected, and this in turn serves to connect the main part of the Suspenders with the auxiliary straps E E. These auxiliary straps are folded, and stiffened at their folds, in precisely the same manner as that just described for the main or shoulder straps; but in Fig. l, for greater clearness, I have lettered the stiffening device for these auxiliary straps e and the projecting loop e.
Although I have only shown the back auxiliary straps, it will be understood that the front auxiliary straps are of the same construction and attached to the front ends of the 'shoulder-straps by any suitable clasp or fastening device.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ,is-
In a suspender, the combination, with the folded integral strap, of a triangular stiffener composed of a single length of bent wire inserted within the fold, and having a projecting eye or .loop at the apex of the fold, and two free ends overlapping and in contactwith the strap, substantially as described.
HENRI BEAUDRY.
