SELF-CLOSING ASH-PAN.

EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,351, dated August 17, 1886.

Application filed March 30, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN A. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self -Closing Ash- Pans; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My present invention has for is object to provide an improved self-closing ash -pan which is adapted to be adjusted in the mouth of an ash-pit, preferably located in the hearth beneath the fire-box of a grate or stove, whereby the operation of dumping the ashes is accomplished without liability of the dust being distributed about the room; and myimproved device consists, essentially, of a metallic frame or receptacle provided with an inclined selfclosing bottom, which is hinged or pivoted to the ends of said frame or receptacle, and adapted to be opened by means .of an upwardly-projecting tongue, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents aperspective view of my improved device; Fig. 2, an end view of the same with the inclined bottom in a closed position, and Fig. 3 a similar view with the inclined bottom in an open position placed in an ash-chute under the grate.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a metallic frame or receptacle, preferably rectangular in shape and open at both top and bottom, the rear lower ends and side being out upon an inclined curve or angle terminating at the bottom of the front vertical wall or side, a, as fully shown in the drawings. tion thereto as to closely impinge upon the bottom opening of said frame or receptacle at all times, except when lifted to discharge the ashes into the pit beneath.

The frame or receptacle, A, is provided with a projecting flange, I), extending entirely around the upper part of the same, and which is adapted to rest over the edges of the ashpit beneath the fire-box to hold the frame in position thereon.

The inclined bottom 13 is preferably provided at each end with projections or hinges 0, arranged at right angles tosaid bottom, and adapted to overlap upon the ends of the frame or receptacle A, to which they are connected by pivots c, at points over the central line, so as to insure of the inclined bottom swinging forward into close contact with the opening in the bottom of the frame or receptacle.

At the rear upper and central portion of the inclined bottom B, and preferably formed integral therewith, is provided a curved tongue or projection, D, the upper end of which passes through a slot, (2, in the rear projecting flange of the frame A, a suitable opening, 6, being provided in the upper end of said tongue or projection for the insertion of the end of a poker therein to draw the tongue or projection upwardly to throw open the inclined bottom 13 to discharge the ashes into the pit or chute below, the inclined bottom im mediately swinging back. to a closed position when the poker is withdrawn.

I do not confine myself to the general shape and dimensions of the frame or receptacle A, or that of the inclined bottom B, as shown, as it is obvious that various changes or modifications of the same may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and such changes or modifications are hereby contemplated by me.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- 1. The ash-pan herein described, having its bottom pivoted to the sides of the pan, and
