'NITED STATES VIRGIL L. WILLIAMS, or
WASHING- GARTERSVILLE, GEORGIA.
MACHINE. F
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,629, dated. August 3, 1886.
Application filed July 17, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, VIRGIL L. WILLIAMS, of Gartersville, in the county of Bartow and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in l/Vashing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
.nection.
My invention relates to washing-machines of that class in which a pounder is operated by a quick action up and down within the wash-tub among the clothes contained therein which are to washed.-
-In the drawings, Figure 1 represents the pounder withinthe tub with my inventionatached. Fig. 2is asection ofa modification of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamp.
In the drawings, A represents an ordinary wash-tub, and B represents an ordinary form of pounder. Attached rigidly to the pounder on the outer periphery is one part a of the strap-hinge. This part extends down to the edge of the pounder, where it is connected with the other part, .b, by the ordinary hinge-con- A clamp, c, is provided, which is adapted to fit over the edge of an ordinary wash-tub, as shown in Fig. 1, with a set-screw on the outer edge, whereby it may be securely attached to the side of the tub. The lowerinner side of the clamp is bent outward in a slight curve, and has a slot cut in it, as indicated at c. The free end I) of the strap is passed through this slot from the inside ofthe clamp,a nd is held in thisposition by thepressure of the set-screw, which secures the clamp to the tub. The clamp is placed over the edge of the wash-tub with the lree end of the-strap between the wash -tub and one side of the clamp, being adjusted to the desired height before the pressureis applied by the set-screw. The hinged connection at the lower end of the strap 1) serves as a fulcrum, upon which the pounder is moved up and down.
Instead of the connection described, I may Serial No. 171,879. (No model.)
dispense with the clamp and perforate the end of the strap 1), as shown in Fig. 2, and secure it at any elevation by means of a thumb-nut and screw to the side of the wash-tub, through which a hole must be made for this purpose. The pounder may be adjusted in height by securing itin the upper or lower holes.
Various other means may be provided for hinging the pounder to the side of the tub without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to pivot a pounder to the side of the tub, as this has been heretofore done by securing a bracket within the tub at each end thereof, saidbracket having a series of projections to support the ends of the pivotal rod, a limited adjustment being obtained by placing the rod in the upperor lower recesses formed by the said projections, and I do not claim this construction.
I claim- 1. In a washing-machine, the combination, with the tub, of a pounder, a strap secured to the pounder at one end, and a clamp adapted to hold the free. end of the strap to the side of the tub, said strap being provided with a hinged joint at its center, substantially as described.
2. In a washing-machine, the combination of the tub, the pounder, the jointed strap secured to the pounder at one end, a clamp adapted to be applied to the side of the tub,
thereof adapted to receive the free end of the strap, and a set-screw adapted to clamp the parts to the side of the tub, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VIRGIL 'L. \VILLIAMS.
