UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP W. MACKENZIE, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO ADDISON SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED GAS-COMPENSATOR'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,582 dated March 4, 1862.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that .I, PHILIP W. MACKENZIE, of Jersey City, Hudson county, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful apparatus, known as Oompensator, for regulating the pressure of gas while being drawn from the retorts by the use of exhausters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon.
My invention consists in the use of two or more corrugated or straight, circular, or other plates of thin metal or any suitable material (which will allow compensation or yielding to the variations in pressure of the gas) joined together at the periphery and having a rod connecting the upper plate with a balancevalve adjustable by means of a screw-th read out on the rod. The valve shown is apparently best adapted to the purpose; but it may be used with any ordinary balanced valve. The rod is connected with the valve on one side of the center, so that if the exhauster by excessive speed is exhausting more gas than is generated the pressure on the upper plate will be withdrawn, the plate depressed, and the valve thrust open to allow a portion of the gas to pass back and prevent the formation of a vacuum. An index plate and pointer is attached to the center of valve outside, showing the movements of the valve.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
Similar letters refer to the same parts of the different figures.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section. Fig. 2 1s a perspective View of valve-seat, showing dial-plate and index. Fig. 3 is horizontal section at the line X X, Fig. 1, compensatingplates being removed. Fig. 4 is a horizontal perspective view with compensatingplates and upper half of valve-seat removed at line Y Y, Fig. 1.
A A, Fig. 1, are the compensating-plates.
d d, Fig. 2, is a circular valve-seat; f, Fig. 1, valve; f, Fig. 1, valve-chamber.
E E are ports opening into valve-chamber at s s, Fig. 1.
c c are pipes connecting with the main pipes 12 b and the exhauster a a, Fig. 1. I
J 1s lower portion of connectingrod, Fig. 1;
j, upper portion of the same with swiveljoint passing through bumper K and nut 'n, Fig. 1, and connecting with upper compensating-plate.
m, Fig. 1, is an ornamental cap making a perfectly-close joint.
0 O is space between compensatingplates communicating with the retorts by the openings through column h h, valve-chamber f, port .9: 0, pipes c and I).
Z l, Figs. 1 and 3, show ab ar through which the conneeting-rod passes. On under side of bar are a number leather or rubber washers K, termed a bumper. The collar secured to the rod below acts against the leather bumper, which, with the bar Z, receives the strain against the upper plate when there is an undue pressure. I
The following is a description of its operation: The gas is drawn from the retorts through the passages b and a by the exhauster, as indicated by the arrows 1 1 1. If the exhauster is at any time driven too fast, reducing'the pressure on the retorts below the desired point, the upper compensating-plate is depressed and thrusts the valve open, allowing the gas to pass back, as indicated by the arrows 2 2, to supply the amount demanded by and due to, the increased speed of exhauster. By the screw onthe connecting-rod the valve is adjusted on the verge of the port, so that the least depression of the plate above will open it. The bumper K receives the strain due to any undue pressure on the plates, relieving them and preventing any vibratory motion, and also preventing the valve rising too far back in its seat.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The use of V the compensating-platesAA, the connecting and adjusting rods 9 and j, in combination with the valve f and circular valve seat 61 d or its equivalent, with long narrow ports 8 s, the whole substantially as herein set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name the 30th day of November,
P. W. MACKENZIE. [L. s.]
In presence of CHARLES W. ISBELL, J. PAYNE LOWE.
