Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL FITZGERALD, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
IIVIROVMNT IN TENTS.
To all wiz/om it' may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL FITZGERALD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in the Construction of Tents and Portable Dwellings; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the drawings hereunto annexed and making part of this specification.
Figure l is a side elevation of the tent ;Fig. 2, a vertical section; Fig. 3, a plan; Fig. 4, a plan of the tent when made with double walls of canvas or other material; Fig.5,a diagram showing the flanged collar and stem for ventilator, Hag-staff, or stove-pipe.
The same letters refer to the same things in all the drawings.
A is the outside; B, posts and rafters; C, radial braces; D, studs; E, cross-ties for the arrangement of berths; F, cords for hammock; G, partition; H, centerstem; I, stove; J, door;
K, window; L, flanged collar; M, the outside of the tent made double.
The object of this construction of tent or portable dwelling is to fold compactly for transportation and to open like a catche when to be expanded.
The outer supports B may be rods of Wood or iron bent at the eaves. t
The radial braces C, of any material, pivot at the bottom and top of the room and at the apex, except that in a mere tent the radial braces at the bottom may be omitted. If there are different stories there should be a set of radial braces for the support of the fioor and a'proper flanged collar, Fig. 5, to receive and hold them. l
The central stem H is removable. It may be used as a stove-pipe, being brought down to theground, or as a ventilator and flagstaff when elevated and fastened. The stem in these cases should be hollow.
When desirable, permanent partitions G, Fig. 4, maybe set of cloth or of boards. They Will lie flat together when folded.
Doors and windows J and -`K can, be set near the post and will fold in. l
To make a Warm tent for winter, the walls A should be made double, as shown atM M, Fig. 4L, and they should be of water-proof material. v
The flanged collar is a simple cylinder or collar with broad flanges into which the radial braces may be set (eitherpivoted or tied) or any way fastened.
C C C C show forms of the radial braces at the point where they pivot in the anged collar.
The partitions, if several are putin of thin boards, are useful to brace the tent.
lVhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--` 1. Constructing a tent in the catche form so that it may fold compactly together vertically in a fiat form and be readily erected, substantially as above described.
2. The use of -the flanged collars to hold the radial braces, constructed substantially as above described.
DANIEL FITZGERALD.
