Description

May 6, 1969 J. c. ABROMAVAGE ETAL- RIVET BUCKER ASSEMBLY Filed May 25. 1967 INVENTORS JOHN C- ABROMAVAGE HARRY J. REICHARDT' A T TOR/vf Ys United States Patent O U.S. Cl. 72-391 6 Claims ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE A punching tool for setting rivets of the type having axially advanceable pins. The tool is hammered to actuate a ram into driving contact with the rivet pin to expand the rivet shank into securing position.
The present invention relates generally to a punching tool adapted for use with rivets of the type having axially advanceable pins. As the rivets are positioned between sheets to be secu-red, the bucker is tapped, axially advancing the pins to split and expand rivet shanks into securing position. With the present bucker assembly, ease in riveting is assured, particularly in the overhead position.
Although rivets having hollow shells expandable by the advancement of internally located pins are old in the art, presently marketed impact tools for use with such rivets continue to be awkward and generally unacceptable for rapid operation.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to permit rivets of the type having axially advanceable pins to be installed with uniform pressure and rapidly, particular-ly in the overhead position.
Other objects will become apparent from the ensuing specification and attached drawing, wherein:
FIG. l is a perspective view of subject bucker and associated rivet;
FIG. 2 is a side view, broken in section, illustrating ram assembly adjacent bottom of advanceable pin of rivet before hammering;
FIG. 3 is aside view, broken in section, illustrating spreading of tubular stem of rivet as bucker is hammered; and
FIG. 4 is a sectional view of bucker illustrating component parts.
Rivets of the type which are expandable by the axial advancement of internally located pins or spreaders are well known in the art and the subject of numerous U.S. Patents such as 2,344,128, 2,536,353, 2,759,082, 2,898,- 798, 3,009,383, 3,009,384, 3,130,629 and 3,147,525, for example.
As such rivet constructions are well known, no eort will be made to describe in detail the particular rivets employed in the present invention. The reference numeral is used generally to illustrate a rivet having pre-formed head 12, outer tubular stem 14 with slits 15 and inner, axially advanceable pin 16. As illustrated in FIG. 3, as pressure is applied to the bottom of pin 16, this element moves outwardly to force the slotted ends of stem 14 outwardly securing adjacent sheets 18 and 20.
As illustrated in detail in FIG. 4, bucker 30 consists generally of handle 32 within which is mounted slidable .housing 34. Within bore 36 of housing 34 and the in ternal recess of handle 32 is located ram assembly 38 which consists generally of rod 40 terminating at its upper end in conical tip 42 and at its lower end in support 44 which is, in turn, attached to block 46 complementarily configured with respect to the inner recess of handle 32. Of course, the conical coniguration of tip 42 may be omitted if desired. Between the lower shoulder 48 of housing 34 and the upper shoulder 50 of block 46 is located spring element 52 normally biasing housing 34 upwardly, as shown in FIG. 4. While cap 54 is attached to handle 32 with screw 56 limiting the upward movement of housing 34, it is obvious that this structure may constitute an integral part of handle 32, if desired. The top 58 of housing 34 is beveled to conform to the configuration of heads 12 of rivets 10.
As will now be apparent, when bucker 30 is positioned in contact with a rivet 10, as seen in FIG. 2, conical tip 42 of ram 40 is located adjacent the bottom of advanceable pin 16. Then, as the lower end 33 of handle 32 is hammered, conical tip 42 pushes pin 16 through outer tubular stem 14 spreading same outwardly to secure adjacent sheets 18 and 20. In this manner', uniform pressure against rivet 10 is assured while permitting rapid riveting in the most awkward positions, particularly in overhead position.
Manifestly, variation in design and rearrangement of parts may be envisioned without departing from the spirit and scope of invention, as defined in the sub-joined claims.
We claim:
1. A bucker assembly for use with a rivet of the type which is expandable by the axial advancement of an internally located spreader, comprising:
(A) a handle designed to be hammered, said handle having a generally axial passageway located therein;
(B) a stationary ram assembly located within said passageway, said assembly terminating upwardly in a tip;
(C) a rivet holder reciprocably mounted within said passageway and including a bore within which a part of said ram assembly is located; and
(D) means resiliently biasing said rivet holder upwardly such that a pre-determined space is left in said bore between said tip of said ram assembly and the top of said rivet holder.
2. A bucker assembly as in claim 1, wherein said top of said -ram assembly is generally flat.
3. A bucker assembly as in claim 1, wherein said tip of said ram assembly is generally conical in configuration.
4. A bucker assembly as in claim 3, wherein said means resiliently biased said rivet holder upwardly is a spring member interposed between said rivet holder and a part of said ram assembly.
5. A bucker assembly as in claim 4, wherein the top of said rivet holder is generally complementary in configuration with respect to said head of said rivet.
6. A bucker assembly for a rivet having a tubular stem terminating at one end thereof in a pre-formed head, the other end of said stem including a slotted portion and an axially advanceable pin located within said stem and protruding therefrom on the opposite side of said head;
a bucker having a handle with a passageway located therein, a ram located within said passageway and terminating in a tip located adjacent said advanceable pin of said rivet, a slidable housing also mounted within said passageway of said handle and including a bore within which a part of said ram and said tip is located, and a spring member located within said passageway and interposed between said housing and a part of said ram such that when said handle is moved toward said rivet, said housing is moved inwardly against said spring member to permit said tip of said ram to force said advanceable pin against said tubular stem at said slotted portion to force said stem outwardly.
