, To all whom it may concern:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NEIL CAMPBELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGN OR TO THE BROOKLYN RAIL WAY SUPPLY COMPANY, OE SAME PLACE.
DRAW-BAR FOR SNOW-SWEEPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333.597, dated January 5, 1886.
Application filed March 24, 18H5.
Be it known that I, NEIL CAMPBELL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Snow-Sweepers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is more partieuiarly adapted to that class of machines in which obliquelyplaced revolving brooms are employed, as set forth in my two applications for patent of even date herewith. (Marked, respectively, Case A77 and Case B.)
The present invention relates more particularly to the construction of the end portions of the sweepers, and both ends being preferably alike a description of one will suffice for both.
The improvement consists, particularly, in a peculiar' construction of braces, whereby I not only secure great rigidity of the parts, but gain considerable space, so that the proper working of the brooms in throwing the snow forward and sidewise is insured. I also increase the rigidity of the dash board by an improved construction of the stiffening-ribs.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification, and represent what I consider the best means of carrying out the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one end cfa snow-sweeper, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same on a smaller scale.
A is the frame of the sweeper. It is covered with a door, a, having a raised rim of boards, a.
B is the draftbar, formed of a stout piece of wood bolted to the cross-beams of the frame A, in the center line of the machine. This draft-bar extends forward a considerable distance beyond the end cross beam, A', and requires, therefore, to be braced strongly against lateral strains. I effect this by means ofthe curved iron bars C, which have their rear ends Vfirmly'bolted to the sides of the frame A, while their front ends bent backward apply against the sides of the bar B, and are firmly bolted thereto, as shown.
The horses are attached to the machine by means of suitable eveners at d, which are projections from the L-shaped piece D, one arm of which is bolted to the draft bar B,
Serial No. 159,916. (No model.)
the other arm, carrying the projections, being braced by the iron bar D', the rear end of which is bolted to the draft-bar B, as shown.
Fig. 2 shows in peculiarly dotted lines the position ofthe revolving broom.
Vhen the machine is moving from the left to the right, the snow will be thrown forward from the broom, the latter revolving in a di- 6o rection opposite to the running wheels.
In certain circumstances it is important that the snow shall bethrown well forward, and yet that it shall be somewhat confined. For this purpose curtains are sometimes attached to the braces C, depending` to a more or less great distance from the ground. It will now be seen that these braces C, when provided with curtains, offer a much larger space into whichthe snow may be thrown 7o than if they were made to extend in straight lines, and their curved shape must therefore be considered quite an important element.
The dasl1board E rises from the raised 75 front rim, a. It is preferably made of thin sheet-iron strengthened by wrought-iron ribs F. These latter are made to extend down to the floor a, thus serving also to hold the riniboard a in a vertical position. These ribs F, 8o at the point where they reach the ioor a, are formed with broadened seats f, from which extend the Shanks f', passing clear through the end cross-beam, A, and being secured on the under side thereof by means of nuts, as shown. o, This construction affords a very strong and reliable support for the dashboard.
I claim as my invention- Inasnow-sweeperhaving revolvingbrooms, 9o the combination of a draft-bar projecting beyond the end of the frame, with curved bars serving to brace said draft-bar against lateral strain, and adapted to carry aprons, substantially as herein specified.
In witness whereof -I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NEIL CAMPBELL.
