Description

Aug. 15,1967 f w.N.BUL OW 3,335,731
SMOOTHING COMB Filed Nov. 1964 INVENTOR W/LL/AM /v. BUL 0W wwz $227M:
United States Patent 3,335,731 SMOOTHING COMB William N. Bulow, 3509 Dwight St, San Diego, Calif. 92104 Filed Nov. 5, 1964, Ser. No. 409,076 1 Claim. (Cl. 132-150) The present invention relates to a smoothing comb and more particularly to a smoothing comb with a tapered rat-tail handle.
In general, the steps of dressing a womans hair comprise brushing the hair thoroughly than back-combing the hair for fullness and finally a smoothing operation. This smoothing operation in the past has been accomplished by a conventional comb with some teeth removed for sparser spacing or with a simple hair pin. This method of smoothing is not only crude but requires an expansive amount of arm motion since conventional combs do not have the mechanical advantages nor do hair pins.
According to the invention, a smoothing comb is provided having an elongated handle preferably moulded of plastic with one end tapered to form a rat-tail. In the other end is mounted a single row of wires preferably made of stainless steel and spaced further apart than a conventional comb that is, A inch and greater. The rattail feature lends a mechanical advantage over the hair pin or conventional comb with teeth removed so that a minimum of arm motion is required and the smoothing operation is accomplished in the main by simple wrist action.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a smoothing comb having a plurality of wire teeth.
A further object of the invention is to provide a smoothing comb having an extended rat-tail handle for an attendant mechanical advantage.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a smoothing comb which is inexpensive, simple to manufacture and extremely durable.
Other objects and many of the attendant advantages of this invention will be readily appreciated as the same becomes better understood by reference to the following detailed description When considered in connection with the accompanying drawing in which the sole figure is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of the instant invention.
Referring to the drawing, a handle shown generally at 11 has an end portion 12 with Wire teeth 13 embedded therein and a tapered handle portion 14 forming a rat-tail. Handle 11 is preferably constructed of a thermal-setting plastic such as nylon or Cycolac-T. This can be formed by injection moulding with stainless steel wire such as that having a .026 inch diameter imbedded therein.
As previously explained, the steps of hair dressing comprise brushing, back combing and smoothing, the instant comb being that for smoothing the hair as the final operation.
Thus, a smoothing comb has been described and disclosed which obviates the disadvantages of the prior art implements such as a conventional comb with teeth removed or a simple hair pin in that the mechanical ad vantage of the long rat-tail handle necessitates mostly wrist action as opposed to tiring arm action.
It should be understood, of course, that the foregoing disclosure relates to only a preferred embodiment of the invention and that it is intended to cover all changes and modifications of the example of the invention herein chosen for the purposes of the disclosure which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A smoothing comb for use in connection with forming boufi'ant and similar hair styles wherein the hair is first teased and then de-densified and subsequently smoothed to form a layer of parallel hair at the outer periphery of the hair style comprising:
(a) a plastic elongated rat tail handle having a first end portion and a second end portion;
(b) a single row of evenly spaced wires embedded in said first portion, said spacing of the wires adapted to permit smoothing of the hair and de-densifying by the entire length of the wires, all of said wires substantially the same length and having a diameter approximately .026 inch and the spacing between each of said wires being not less than A of an inch and said wires being constructed of stainless steel; and
(c) said second portion of said handle is tapered to form a rat tail at the end thereof, whereby a smoothing comb is provided which can reach greater depths in the hair to de-densify said hair and is readily adapted to perform the forming of the layer of parallel hair with precise accuracy and a minimum of movement.
