RECORD FILING DEVICE Filed Oct. 14, 1965 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 1721 67! for dayw lwafww' United States Patent 3,332,651 RECORD FILING DEVICE Eugene T. Fleischhauer, Charlottesville, Va., assignor to Acme Visible Records, Inc., Crozet, Va., a corporation of Delaware Filed Oct. 14, 1965, Ser. No. 495,808 3 Claims. (Cl. 248-146) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A record filing device comprising a stand defined by a pair of spaced parallel walls, a spaced parallel pair of bars secured to and between said Walls intermediate the top and bottom end portions thereof, and a tray disposed in said stand between and in embracing engagement with the upper end portions of said walls.
Briefly summarized, the present invention relates to a record filing device comprising a tray and supporting stand therefor, the tray being readily separable from the stand. The stand which comprises a pair of spaced walls can be made of sheet metal and edgewise reinforced in a vertical direction. These walls are in part joined together and disposed in spaced apart relationship by a pair of tie bars spaced from the upper edges of the walls. The tray is adapted to seat between the walls and is formed with opposed flanged upper edges which are adapted to embrace the upper edges of the walls of the stand in reinforcing relationship therewith, complementary to said bars.
An advantage of the present invention is that it permits the provision and construction of a stand of relatively economical character and while not complete in itself, is completed by disposition therein of an upwardly open tub type record filing tray to form a structurally strong composite.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention relate to its details of construction, arrangement of parts and economies thereof, as will be apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective view of the tray and stand components of the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary section on line 22 of FIG. 1, with a record filing divider disposed in the tray.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of the assembly of FIG. 1 taken on line 3,3 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary plan view taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral generally indicates the tray component of the present invention comprised of end walls 11, 11 and side walls 12, 12 and a bottom 9. The end walls 11, 11 extend vertically and are parallel to each other, whereas the side walls 12, 12 diverge in upwardly and outwardly direction, permitting materials filed therein, including dividers generally indicated as 13, to be pivoted in said tray and to be disposed therein in inclined position parallel to the incline of the side walls 12, 12.
Secured, as by spot-welding, to the end walls 11, 11 are a pair of opposed guide rails 14, one of which is shown in FIG. 1. Integral with the upper edges of the walls 11, 11 are the angular flanges 15, 15 which are employed for cooperative engagement with the stand component generally indicated as 16 as will be hereinafter explained. The side walls 12, 12 can also be provided with angular flanges 17, 17 although these are principally for rigidity of the tray.
3,332,651 Patented July 25, 1967 "ice The stand component of the present invention comprises an opposed pair of walls 18, 18 each suitably composed of sheet metal material and provided with vertically extending edgewise reinforcing members 19, 19 which are suitably integral with the panels 18 and comprise edge rolls to form tubular reinforcing members for the panels 18.
Extending medially between opposed pairs of tubes 19 are the tubular members 20, 20 which are respectively secured to opposed vertical tubes 19 by suitable means such as screws 21 extending through the tubes 19 and engaged within the tubes 20 as at 22. For mobility, casters 23 are engaged to the lower ends of the tubes 19 as shown in FIG. 2.
FIG. 2 illustrates the manner in which the stand 16 and the tray 10 are engaged to each other. It will be here noted that the end walls 11, 11 fit snugly between the tubes 19 carried by the opposed walls 19, 19 and the angular flanges 15 fit snugly over and embrace the outer surfaces of the panels 18, 18. Thus with the tray snugly disposed between the walls 18 and in abutment against their inturned tubes 19 and with the flanges 15 in embracing engagement over the top of the tubes 19 and against the outer surfaces of the panels 18, firm reinforcing engagement is brought about whereby the stand 16 becomes rigidified into an economical, easily constructed and assembled composite.
If desired, the tray can be withdrawn from the stand and for such purpose when it is desired to rest the tray 10 on a supporting surface it is provided with foot members 24.
For use, the tray 10 shown in detail in FIGS. 2 and 3 can be adapted to support records including dividers such as the unit 13 which is composed of a sheet 25 having legs 26 which extend into and are pivotally supported in the channels 27 secured to tray bottom 9. These panels 13 are further provided at their upper edges with index tab means 28 and lateral projections 29 which extend over the guide rails 14 and abut thereagainst when the divider panels 13 are in inclined position as shown in FIG. 4.
Although I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood by those skilled in the art that changes may be made in the details thereof without departing from its scope as comprehended by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A record filing device comprising a stand defined by a pair of spaced parallel walls, a spaced parallel single pair of bars secured to and between said walls intermediate the top and bottom end portions thereof, disposing said walls in vertical position, and a separable tray disposed in said stand between and in embracing engagement with the upper end portions of said walls and in reinforcing relationship therewith, complementary to said bars.
2. A record filing device comprising a stand defined by a pair of spaced walls, each of said walls terminating in vertically extending edgewise disposed reinforcing components, a transverse bracing member extending between and secured to each opposed pair of said vertically extending components in spaced relationship to their upper ends, and a tray disposed between said walls, said tray including angular flanges at opposed ends thereof in embracing engagement with said walls and their said vertically extending components in stabilizing relationship therewith.
3. A record filing device comprising a stand defined by a pair of spaced end walls of sheet material each of said walls terminating in vertically extending edgewise disposed inturned tubular components, a single pair of trans- References Cited verse tubular bracing members extending between and UNITED STATES PATENTS secured to each opposed pan of vertically extending tubular components in spaced relationship to their upper 1,474,872 11/1923 E ends, and a tray disposed between said walls in substan- 21254939 9/1941 Ehas 248 150 tially contiguous relationship to said vertically extending 5 2,257,188 9/ 1941 Page 248-146 X tubular components, said tray including angular flanges 2,763,880 9/1956 Mulcahy 24815O X at its opposed ends disposed in embracing engagement with the outer surface of said end walls and in stabilizing ROY FRAZER Puma), Examiner relationship with said stand. 1'0 F.
