WITNESS as: W l/VVE/VTOI? By WWi ZM W ATTORNEY UNITED STATES fa'rniwr @rrrcn.
WILLIAM LORD HALL, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
BOSOM-SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,786, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed February 2, 1885. Serial No. 154,652. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LORD HALL, of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bosom Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bosom-shirts; and it has for its object the production of a cheap and simple means for attaching the bosom to the shirt.
My invention consists in the combination, with a shirt-front that is made with a front reenforce that has abosom-opening cut out therefrom, of a bosom having an inner facing with the edge of the opening cut in the reenforce arranged to underlap the edges of the bosom and iacing where adjacent, and a bias strip having turned-in side edges, said strip being laid exteriorly and then sewed through the turned-in edge on one of its sides to and through the bosom, re-enforce, and shirt-front proper, and on its outer turned-in edge to and through theshirt-front proper and re-enforce, said strip covering the lapping edges of the bosom and re-enforce.
Accompanying this specification to form a part of it there are two plates of drawings containing three figures illustrating my inven tion, with the same designation of its parts by letter reference used in all of them.
Of these illustrations, Figure 1 is a plan View of the ire-enforce as cut out for the hosom and laid over the shirt-front proper, one of the upper inner corners of the re-enforce being shown as turned down. Fig. 2 illustrates the parts after the attachment of bosom and shirt has been made, they being shown as ripped apart on the line of their union, turned over and down at the top and one side of the attachment. Fig. 3 shows a section taken on the line war of Fig. 2, with the thickness of the parts exaggerated.
The parts of the shirtand those making the attachment of bosom and shirt are designated by letter-reference, and the process steps by which the attachment is made are described as follows: The letter S designates 1 the shirt-body proper or shirt-front; R, the re-enforce; B, the bosom; F, the bosom-facing; D, a bias-cut strip, and 0 an opening out in the re-enforce. The parts are attached by laying the re-enforce R over the shirtfront, then superimposing the bosom-facing and bosom, so that the edges of the opening cut in the re enforce will underlap the coincidently-laid edges of the bosom and facing. To secure the parts thus laid before being sewed, they may be pasted, if desired. Vith the parts laid as thus stated, the bias-cut strip D is placed over the edges of the bosom and sewed through its turned'in edge a to and through the bosom, bosom-facing, and under-lapping edge of the opening cut in the fE-EllfOICfi, as indicated at m, and then the strip D is sewed through its turned-in side edge, cf, to and through the reenforce It and shirt-front proper, as indicated at m, the strip covering" the edges of the boson], and being, as before described, on one of its turned-in edges sewed to and through the latter, the bosom proper, bosom-facing, and underlapping edge of the re-enforce opening, and upon its otherside edge through its turnedin edge a to and through the TG-BHfOlCG and shirtbody proper. The attachment thus illustrated and described is easily made, and it thoroughly secures the parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an attachment for connecting a bosom to a shirt, the combination of the re-enforce It, having an opening, 0, with the edges of the bosom and bosom-facing both superimposed to overlap the edge of the re-enforce opening 0, and a bias-out strip, D, having turned-in side edges, a a which strip is sewed through one of its turned-in side edges to and through the bosom, bosom-lining, and underlapping re-eni'orce, and upon its other side edge through the latter, and to and through the re-enforce and shirt-body, the said strip as attached covering the overlapping edges of bosom and fac ing, as shown and described.
Signed at Troy, New York, this 22d day of October, 1884, in the presence of the two wit-.
nesses whose names are hereto written.
WILLIAM LORD HALL. XVit-nesses:
CHARLES S. BRINTNALL, G. H. SHEPARD.
