PARDON ARMINGTON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE ARMINGTON 8t SIMS ENGINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LUBRICATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Iietters Patent No. 330,768, dated November 17, 1835.
Application filed December 9, 1884.
T (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PARDON ARMINGTON, of the city and county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and use ful Improvementin Lubricators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of auto- 1o matic lubricators which are provided with wipers for taking the oil from the cup and conveying it to the bearing-surface; and the object of my invention is to produce a lubricator of this class in which the oil may be readily fed by hand when any impediment occurs in the working of the automatic cup.
To the above purpose my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the lubricator, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved lubricator. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same on a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 1.
In the said drawings, A designates an automatic lubricating-cup, which may be of any suitable or preferred form, and have a screwcap, a, and a screw-threaded drip-nozzlaa. This cup is removably attached to an arm, B, which is secured to a fixed part of an engine.
0 designates an open frame.which is formed upon or secured to the arm B, and which car- Serial No. 149,838. (No model.)
ries at its lowest point a tube, D. The stem of this tube is externally threaded, so as to screw through a threaded eye in the frame 0 and extend vertically downward. The upper o end of this tube is preferably flared, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to more certainly receive the oil from the cup, and said tube contains a wick which extends lengthwise through it.
E designates a cup, which is secured to a 5 moving part of the engine and passes back and forth beneath the lower end of the tube D. This cup is hollow and carries a metal wiper, e, which scrapes across the wick in the tube, and removes a certain quantity of oil therefrom at each passage of the cup E. The oil flows through the cup E and downward to the bearing-surfaces.
If, as is liable to be the case, the automatic cup A gets out of order, the oil may be fed into the top of tube D by hand, and thus the engine need not be immediately stopped to fix the cup A,which can be readily detached for repair or replacement of another cup.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim 63 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the detachable oilcup A, having the pending drip-nozzle a, of the arm B, secured to a fixed portion of the engine and bearing the frame 0, which carries 65 on its lower part the wick-tube D, adjustable thereon in the field of the wiper-cup E, for the purpose described.
