' NITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED CANNON, OF HIGH SPIRE, PENNSYLVANIA.
VEGETABLE-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,560, dated November 17, 1885.
Application filed July 24, 1885. Serial No. 172,565.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED CANNON, of High Spire, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Vegetable-Gutter, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to machines intended more particularly for cutting vegetables for preserving or cooking purposes or for feeding stock, but adapted also for cutting a variety of other substances; and the object of the invention is to economize time and labor by providing a simple, inexpensive, efficient, and durable machine for performing the work.
The invention consists in the particular construction and combination of parts of the cutter, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the vegetable-cutter table and feed-box, and showing the cutter wheel or head in edge View and partly broken away and in section; and Fig. 2is an end view of the machine with the cutter-wheel shaft in section and the crank shown in dotted lines.
The letter A indicates the cutter wheel or head, which is fixed to a shaft, B, which is journaled in eye-straps or boxes 0, fixed in one side wall of the feed-box D, which is fixed to the table or bed-piece E, mounted on suitable legs, F, of proper height to support the machine in position most convenient for turning the cutter-wheel A by means of a crank, G, fixed to the wheel-shaft B. The cutterwheel A is fitted with three knives H, which are held over openings h, made through the body of the wheel, so that the material cut by the knives will escape at the back of the Wheel and fall into any suitably-placed receptacle. I fasten the knives H to the face of the wheel A by means of screws, and so that the knives may be set nearer to or farther from the face of the wheel, which serves as a gage-plate in cutting slices thinner or thicker, as may be desired. The feed-box D consists of side pieces, at (I, attached to the table E, and when the machine is to be used for cutting vegetablessuch as cabbages or potatoes and the like-an inclined board or plate I will be placed in the (No model.)
box D, between its side pieces,d d, said board I preferably being supported by its lower forward beveled edgem', on the table E, next the cutter-wheel A, and on the back board, J, attached to board I and resting on the table E. The board J has fixed in its lower edge, near its back or outer end,'a pin, j, which is adapted to be set into any one of aseries of holes e, made in the top of the table E,for holding the forward edge of the inclined board or plate I at any desired distance from the cutter-wheel, and allowing the inclined board I to readily be lifted from the table E at any time desired.
It is evident that when the inclined board I is used in the feed-box the substances in the box will feed down to the cutter-wheel by gravity, and will be cut or sliced without pushing or pressing them toward the wheel, and whenever it is desired the inclined board I may be removed, with its support J, to allow any particular vegetable or other substance to be cut square across by the knives in the cutterwheel as it is fed along the table E between the feed-box walls at d to the wheel.
Although the machine is specially adapted for use as a vegetable-cutter, it may be used for cutting or slicing dried beef and a variety of other substances.
The machine may be made in various sizes, adapted for use in manufacturing establishments, restaurants, and families, and will answer for cutting vegetables for feeding stock on farms, and in any case will serve well its intended purposes, and accomplish its work with economy of time and labor.
I do not claim the particular construction of my cutting-disk, nor do I claim, broadly,an inclined adjustable feed-board.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a vegetable-cutter, the combination of the feed-box, open at its top and forward end and provided with a series of holes in its bottom, the inclined feed-board having a support on its under side, and a pin on the under side of the support adapted to enter any one of said holes, and a cutter operating across the open forward end of the feed-box, in front of the feed-board, substantially as set forth.
ALFRED CANNON.
