CAFIERO DRAWER PULL AND LABEL HOLDER 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Oct. 20, 1965 If EM 8 \i /w I N VEN TORv V/A/CENT d- CAP/ER A T'TOPNEYS United States Patent "ice 3,300,887 DRAWER PULL AND LABEL HOLDER Vincent J. Cafiero, Irvington, N.Y., assignor to Art Metal, Inc., Jamestown, N.Y. Filed Oct. 20, 1965, Ser. No. 498,895 4 Claims. (Cl. 40-325) proved label holding arrangement whereby to present the label to view in an improved manner and also permitting interchange of labels with ease and facility.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the specification hereinafter and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a front perspective view of a cabinet or the like having a sliding drawer and a bottom hinged door panel, each equipped with a combination label holder and pull device of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary, close-up, front elevational view of a device of the invention as shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a rear, elevational view of the structure of FIG. 2;
FIGS. 4 and 5 are sectional views taken as suggested by lines 44 and 5-5 of FIG. 6;
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view, on enlarge-d scale, taken as suggested by line 66 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 7 is an exploded perspective view of the two components of the device of the invention, as shown in the drawing herewith.
As illustrated herein by way of example, the device of the invention is adapted to be mass-produced by simple casting or mold-ing processes, to comprise a pair of components adapted to be slip-fitted together and then inserted into an apertured portion of the drawer header or door panel (as the case may be); and then fastened in place and in assembled relation by means of simple machine screws. Thus, referring more particularly to FIGS. 4, 5, 6, the panel member upon which the device is to be mounted may comprise a sheet metal construction including a front plate 10 and a back plate 12; the front plate 10 having rearwardly turned marginal flanges as indicated at 14. Thus, when the front and back plates are relatively assembled as shown in FIG. 6, they pro vide a dual-walled panel construction. The front plate is rectangularly apertured as indicated at 16, and the back plate is apertured as indicated at 18.
The device of the invention comprises, as perhaps is best shown in FIG. 7, a front frame member designated generally at and a back base member designated generally at 22. The .front frame 20 includes a rectangularly shaped open window portion 24 mar-gined by a rim 26 dimensioned to protrude through the aperture 1 6 of the front plate when the parts are in assembled position, thereby finishing off the front aperture of the installation. Integrally formed with the frame part at its opposite ends are ear portions 28, 28, which are apertured as indicated at 29 to accommodate mounting screws as indicated at 3030. The main body portion of the frame member is recessed or socketed inwardly from the rear thereof. The back base member 22 comprises a generally flat rectangularly shaped piece 32 having a forwardly protruding 3,300,887 Patented Jan. 31, 1967 sloping land portion 34 formed integrally therewith to provide an inclined surface against which a label card or the like as indicated at 35 may recline when the device is assembled as shown in FIG. 6. Note that when the parts are in assembled relation the protruding land portion 34 slip-fits into the rear s-ocketed" portion of the front frame member. The back base member 32 is also apertured at its opposite ends as indicated at 37, 37 so as to accommodate the mounting screws 30, 30 for assembly of the parts and mounting on the unit on the panel, as
shown in FIGS. 4, 5.
To accommodate the mounting screws 30, 30, simple Z brackets 40, 40, or the like may be employed as shown in FIGS. 4, 5; the Z brackets being spot-welded or otherwise suitably fixed to the panel rear plate 12. Or, in lieu thereof, any other form of mounting connection may be provided. As shown in FIGS. 6, 7, the base member 22 is slightly recessed as indicated at 42 along its upper edge in the region where the land surface 34 intersects the plane of the back surface of the base member, whereby to provide a horizontally extending upwardly-opening slot into which the label 35 may be downwardly slipfitted into operative position as shown in FIG. 6. Thus, it will be appreciated that when the device of the invention is assembled on a filing drawer header or door panel or the like as illustrated and described hereinabove, an identification label for the cabinet contents may be simply sl-ip-fitted from the rear of the panel downwardly through the slot as indicated at 18 (FIG. 6) into a firmly held reclining position against the inclined land surface 34.
It is also a particular feature that the top sill portion of the front frame member 20 is upwardly recessed as indicated at 45 (FIG. 6), thereby providing interiorly thereof an upwardly extending pocket across the width of the device into which the finger tips of the user may be inserted, thereby providing a hand-hold or pull device for the drawer or door device, as the case may be. The label card to be inserted in the mechanism of the invention is preferably provided with a transparent protective device, such as for example a clear plastic or varnish coating. Or, a separate transparent sheet of plastic, celluloid or the like may be disposed to lie in front of the label card.
Thus it will be appreciated that the device of the invention, when assembled in a drawer header or the like, presents to view in a slightly upwardly inclined manner the label plate identifying the contents of the drawer; and that in order to pull the drawer open the user simply slip-fits his finger tips upwardly into the recess behind the top edge of the open window portion, and then pulls outwardly thereon. Whereas the device is illustrated and described hereinabove by way of example to be formed of cast or molded metal, it will of course be understood that it may with equal facility be molded of plastic; or, alternatively, may be fabricated of any other material such as sheet metal, or the like.
Also, it is to be understood that Whereas only one form of the invention has been illustrated and described in detail hereinabove, it will be understood that various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
-I claim:
1. A combination label holder and pull device for installation in an apertured portion of a movable door panel,
of frame-like form having attachment means extending laterally therefrom and a centrally disposed label viewing aperture, said back base member having attachment means extending laterally thereof for assembled registry with the attachment means of said frame member and also including a main body portion comprising a forwardly protruding fiat land surface portion projecting into the socketed portion of said framing member behind said frame member aperture and thereby providing means for supporting a label viewable through said frame member aperture when said parts are in assembled relation.
2. 3. A combination label holder and :pull device for installati-on in an apertured portion of a movable door panel, drawer header, or the like; said device comprising a from frame member and a back base member slidably interfitting to comprise a mutually reinforcing unit providing a label holding slot-like space therebetween, said front frame member comprising a main body portion of frame-like form having attachment means extending laterally therefrom, said back base member having attachment means extending laterally thereof for assembled registery with the attachment means of said frame member and also including a main body portion comprising a vertically inclined fiat land surface portion projecting into said frame member body portion and thereby providing means for supporting a label viewable through said front frame member when said :parts are in assembled relation.
4. A combination label holder and pull device for installation on a movable door panel, drawer header, or the like; said device comprising a front frame member and a back :base member slida-bly interfitting to comprise a mutually reinforcing unit providing a label holding slotlike space therebetween, said front frame member comprising a socketed main body portion having attachment means extending laterally therefrom and a centrally disposed label viewing apertnre, said back base member including a main body portion having attachment means extending laterally thereof and including a forwardly protruding vertically inclined flat land surface portion projecting into the socketed portion of said framing member behind said frame member aperture and thereby providing means for supporting a label viewable through said frame member aperture when said parts are in assembled relation.
