UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES HUNTLEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE T. WEAVER, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR IMMOVABLY SECURING BOXES.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,779, dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed August 10, 1885. Serial No. 173,942. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES HUNTLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at 714 Cherry street, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Immovably Securing Boxes, of which the following is a specifica tion, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improved means or devices for securing a box in a fixed position. The bottom of said box is constructed to extend for a short distance beyond'the rear wall, thus forming a flange, which enters a groove formed by a portion of the bed-plate, and which bed-plate is also provided with suitable keepers, which enter the body of the lock to be engaged by the bolt, all as more fully hereinafter set forth, and particularly claimed.
I have illustrated my invention by the accompauying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top or plan view of the box with my improve ments arranged in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line x :v of Fig. 1, showing clearly the means by which the box is secured or locked to the bed-plate. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bed-plate. Fig. 4. is a face view of the lock with the front wall removed, thus showing its interior construction.
Similar letters refer to like parts.
In the drawings, A represents a box, preferably constructed in rectangular shape.
B is a bed-plate, which is secured firmly to a desk or counter, N, at a suitable point of convenience to be used for locating the box.
A hinged lid, a, forming the top of the box A, is provided with a bail or handle, ((1, as a means of transporting the same, and two keepers, a a, for engaging a bolt, 0, within the lock E, said lock extending the full length of the box A in one direction along the front.
The bed-plate Bis returned at its rear end, lettered n in the drawings, so as to form a suitable groove, into which the flange a,
formed by the extension of the bottom of the box, may enterand be held firmly. Thesaid bed-plate B is further provided with keepers 1) b similar to those of the lid a.
The lock E, I do not claim as entirely new, such as the arranging of one or more tumblers or similar appliances for operating the bolt. The only object sought to-be covered in this particular is to utilize the said bolt 0 in a twofold way-flrst, by locking the lid of the box, and, secondly, by securing said box to the bed-plate at one operation. When the box is not secured to the bed-plate, the bolt will only engage the keepers of the lid a when the box, after being looked, is to be carried about.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new the following:
1. The combination of the box having a flange projected laterally from its lower edge and apertures formed in its bottom near the side opposite the flange with a bed-plate having one sidereturned to form a groove for the reception of the flange of the box, hooked keepers projected from the plate opposite the flange, and a locking-bolt adapted to engage the keepers to lock the box to the bed-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the bed-plate having a grooved projection near one edge and hooked keepers near its opposite edge with a box having a lateral flange to enter the groove, and apertures in its bottom to receive the keepers,a hinged cover for the box, provided with keepers opposite its hinges, and a lock ing-bolt to engage the keepers on the bed plate and hinged cover, whereby the cover is firmly locked and the box securely fastened in place, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES HUNTLEY.
