To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PARK D. Routes, of Hays Landing, in the county of Issaqnena and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Hoe-Sharpener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My in vention relates to implements designed particularly for sharpening the blades of hoes, but useful also for giving an edge to axes, mowing-machine knives, or other cutting tools, and has for its object to facilitate the sharpening operations and enable them to be performed with greater accuracy and at a largelyreduced cost compared with the use of files.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts of the sharpener, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawi ugs, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hoesharpener as in use on a hoe, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.

The letters A B indicate two lever-bars, which are pivoted together on a pin, 0. and

back of the pivot are formed with handles a I b, respectively, and forward of the pivot take the shape of long jaws, the implement in general appearance somewhat resembling a pair of ordinary shears.

In the jaw A of lever-bar A is held, preferably by a set-screw, d, a Whetstone or sharpener, D, which may be of any suitable kind or grade of fineness, according to the tool or implement or cutter it isto be used for sharpening, and in the end of the jaw B of lever-bar B is pivoted, on a pin, 6, the roller or anti-friction wheel E, the periphery of which projects beyond the end of the bar, which preferably is turned upward, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

In using the sharpener on a hoe-blade, for instance, the jaws A B will be opened so that the whets'tone D will rest on the blade F of the hoe at an angle with one face of the blade,while the anti-friction roller E rests against the other face of the blade, as shown, and by holding the handles a b of the implement in one hand while the other hand holds the hoe the sharpener may be moved lengthwise to carry the Whetstone D back and forth over the edge of the hoeblade to give it a clean sharp edge.

The sharpener may be used either jaw uppermost for sharpening the hoe-blade all fromone side or face or from both faces, as may be desired.

The roller E is not essential to the successful working of the implement; but it greatly facilitates the sharpening operation, as its rolling contact r uccs the friction on the hoe-blade face to @llnllllllll), and enables the operator to much more easily control the posit-ion of the whetstone on the blade to present the stone square across the edge of the tool or at any desired angle to either side.

It is evident that thesharpcncr may be used to advantage for giving an edge to a large variety of t0olsaxes, for instance-and also may be used to sharpen mowing-machine knives without removing them from the machine.

The Whetstone D may readily be turned in the jaw A to present any one of its faces to the work, and may be replaced quickly by a new stone when worn out or when broken by accident.

The bars A B need not necessarily be provided with handle portions a I; back of the pivot, as the jaws A B may be held closed on the blade or cutter to be sharpened by direct pressure of the hand; but the construction with handles is preferred.

lhe sharpener, as a simple, inexpensive, and effective implement, is intended to take the place of files, which are costly and unsatisfactory in use for the purposes specified.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
