ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a rear safety attachment for ski comprising a reharnessing pedal which is operable by the boot heel of the skier, the volume between the pedal and the ski being filled by a variable space delimiting lump of flexible material or sliding flanges formed by the pedal and a base plate on the ski which defines an enclosed variable space.
The instant application relates to improvements in a rear safety attachment for ski including a reharnessing pedal or the like.
In the known rear safety attachment for ski acting on the heel of the boot, the operation of the said attachment often reveals itself to be defectuous or inefficient due particularly to snow and/ or ice being introduced during release in the free space formed between the reharnessing pedal or the like of the attachment and the base of the device or ski.
The present invention proposes to overcome this inconvenience in a simple and efficient manner.
According to the invention, the said space which has a variable volume during operation is protected, for instance, by placing in the said volume or space a lump of flexible material capable of deforming in accordance with the variations of this volume so that the said space will be filled in all cases thus preventing filling by snow and/ or ice, the said lump being eventually retained in position by gluing. According to another embodiment of the invention, the parts defining the variable volume such as the pedal or the like and/ or the base can also be provided at their periphery with flanges or lugs that will overlap during relative movement of the said parts to thus prevent snow and/or ice from entering into the said space. The latter could furthermore be filled with a lump of flexible material.
According to the invention, the lump or lump of flexible material can advantageously be solid or comprise one or several cells, be made of multicellular material or still designed in the form of a bellows.
The invention will be best understood with reference to the following description and the appended schematic drawing giving, by way of non-limitative example, preferred embodiments of the invention.
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of a rear attachment including the improvement of the invention.
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of a rear attachment including the improvement of the invention according to another embodiment.
FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 are partial views in longitudinal cross-section of rear attachments including the improvement of the invention according to still other embodiments.
In FIG. 1, the heel of the boot 1 is shown during harnessing as it just comes in abutment on the end 2 of a reharnessing pedal 3. A prismatic lump 6 of multicellular material is disposed between the end 2 and the base plate 7 secured to the ski and supporting the Whole of the device, the said lump being advantageously glued on the base plate 7. During opening of the attachment, the lump 6 does not leave any free space that could be filled by snow and/ or ice thus avoiding accumulation of said snow and/ or ice under the pedal 3 and faulty operation of the latter during lowering of the boot heel 1 according to arrow 10.
In FIG. 2, the space between the reharnessing pedal 13, which is similar to pedal 3 of FIG. 1, and the base plate 17 is protected by flanges 15 of said pedal 13 and by flanges 16 of the base plate 17. Flanges 15 and 16 overlap to prevent snow and/or ice from penetrating beneath pedal 13 thus ensuring, as in FIG. 1, proper of the pedal.
The attachment of FIG. 3 differentiates from that of FIG. 1 only in that the lump 6 of multicellular material is replaced by a prismatic protection lump 20 inserted between the reharnessing pedal 3 and the base plate 7, the said lump 20 having a central cell 21 to permit easy compression thereof.
The attachment of FIG. 4 only differentiates from that of FIG. 1 in that the lumps 6 of multicellular material is replaced by a bellows 25 inserted between the reharnessing pedal 3 and the base plate 7.
The attachment of FIG. 5 comprises both a lump of multicellular material inserted between the pedal 31 and the base plate 32 secured to the ski 8 and flanges 33 for the said pedals 31 and 34 for the base plate 32, similar to those of FIG. 2 respectively numbered 15 and 16.
Although several embodiments of this invention have just been described, it will be understood that various modifications may be made thereto within the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a rear safety attachment for a ski boot on a ski, the combination comprising:
(a) a base plate adapted to be mounted on the ski and to extend under the rear part of the heel of the boot,
(b) a reharnessing pedal pivotally mounted on said ski and operable by the heel of the boot, the said pedal having a front portion extending over said base plate under the rear part of the heel, the movement of the said front portion over said base plate defining a space of variable volume,
(c) variable space delimiting means between said base plate and said front portion to prevent entry of snow and/or ice in said volume during the full pivoting action of the pedal.
2. A combination as claimed in claim 1, wherein said means is a prismatic lump of flexible material.
3. A combination as claimed in claim 2, wherein said lump of flexible material is rubber.
4. A combination as claimed in claim 2, wherein said lump is made of a plastic material.
5. A combination as claimed in claim 2, wherein said lump of flexible material is formed with at least one inner cell.
6. In a rear safety attachment for a ski, the combination comprising:
(a) a reharnessing pedal pivotally mounted on said ski and operable by the boot heel of the skier, said pedal defining with said ski a space of variable volume during displacement of said pedal in relation to said ski;
3 4 (b) variable space delimiting means between said pedal References Cited and the ski to prevent entry of snow and/0r ice in UNITED STATES PATENTS said volume during full displacement of said pedal; (c) a base plate on said ski beneath said pedal, said 2'823557 2/1958 Lemmlg 280.1135 delimiting means comprise flanges depending from 5 3,125,349 3/1964 Schwelzer 280 11'35 said pedal and further flanges upstanding from said 2,458,602 1/1949 Johnson 280-1135 plate in overlapping relationship with the flanges of 2,950,118 8/1960 Sharpe 28011.35 X
