Description
UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. sEEGMUELLER, OE HAMILTON, OHIO.
VEGETABLE-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,306, dated March 23, 1886.
Application tiled November 9, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs A. SEEG- MUELLER, of Hamilton, Baller count-y, Ollio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains t-o certain improvements in the construction of that class of vegetable-cutting machines in which is employed a horizontally-disposed rotary cutting disk, the vegetables t be cut 'being placed within a retaining-ring over the cutting disk, and prevented from rotating with the disk by means of a cross-bar over the disk within the retain ing-ring.
My improvements will be readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- 1 Figure l is an elevation of my improved machine; Fig. 2, an elevation of t-he same, showing portions in vertical section; Fig- 3. a horizontal section of the same; and Fig. 4
` a vertical section through the euttingvdisk.
In the drawings, A indicates a metallic ring; B, vertical legs rmly bolted to this ring; C, a frame-piece at the top of the machine, reacl1- ing across between and connected to two of the legs, which project upward beyond the ring; D, a cross-piece disposed diametrically Within the ring and rigidly secured therein; E, a rotating cutting-disk disposed just below the ring and cross-piece, and concentric with the ring; F, curved slicing-knives secured at curved slots in the cuttingdisk, the cuttingedges of the knives projecting slightly above the upper surface of the cutting-disk; G, a vertical shaft journaled in the parts C and D, and having the cutting-disk secured to its lower end, so as to rotate with it; H, a horizontal shaft provided with a hand-crank and journaled in the upper parts of the frame, and beveled geared to the Vertical shaft G; J, a circu- Scrial Xo. 182,200. (No model.)
lar hopper formed ot' sheet metal and disposed concentrically just below the cuttingdisk; and K, hooks attached to two of the legs and serving as sustaining elements for the hopper.
The cabbage to be cut is placed Within the ring upon the cutting` disk on either side of the cross-piece D. The cuttingdisk is then rotated by means of. the hand crank in an 0bvious manner, and the knives slice off the cabbage, which is prevented from being carried around by the rotating disk by means of the crosspiece D. The cut cabbage falls through the hopper J into a proper vessel placed below to receive it.
Itshould be understood that vegetable-cutters of the general class described are old and Well known, it being very common to arrange a rigid bottomless tub-1ke vessel upon legs or upon a base, the apparatus being provided with a cutting-disk and driving mechanism, substantially7 as described in connection with my improvements. In the old constructions the legs have served no office save as elevated supports, the vessel receiving no re-enforcements from them. In the old structures the vessel-rim, to be properly rigid, involved an undesired amount of weight for a portable machine. In my construction the rim and frame parts are so connected with each other as to secure stability with lightness.
I claim as my invention- In'avegetable-cutter, the combination, with cutting disk E, its shaft G, andrlegs B, of the ring A, disposed over the cuttingdisk and Within the legs and secured to the legs, the cross-piece D, secured within the ring, and the hopper J, suspended below the ring within the legs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHAS. A. SEEGIWIUELLER.
Vitnesses:
W. A. SEWARD, J. W. SEE.
