MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,103, dated March 16, 1886,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. PooL, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Music-Leaf Turners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to attachments for pianos, organs, and music-stands, &c. by means of which the music-leaves may be turned in accordance with the performers progress through the composition; and the object of my invention is to produce a music-leafturner which may be quickly and readily manipulated without affecting the execution of the piece.
To the above purpose my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction, whereby the leaves are turned over and back again,according to the requirements of the composition, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved music-leaf turner. Fig. 2 is a see tional View of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the carrier and its immediate connections. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of my invention.
In the said drawings, A designates the framework of the device, a a the end pieces thereof, and a a brackets extending from frame A.
B designates a roll, which is journaled at its ends in the end pieces, a a, and upon which is formed a spiral groove, 1). Just back of this bar B, and extending parallel therewith, is a rod, 0, the ends of which are also set in the end pieces.
D designates a bar, which rests at its ends in the end pieces, a a, but which is set obliquely to the roll B and bar 0, said bar D being nearer to bar 0 at the end piece, a, and farther from bar O at end piece, a.
Upon the bar D are mounted two sliding blocks, E E, having each a clamping-screw, e, and a rack-bar, e, the latter extending toward each other and lapping at their outer ends.

F designates a carrier, which is mounted upon roll B, and which is formed with projections f, engaging in grooves b of said roll. The roll B is also provided with a gear-pinion, b, which is located in the center of the roll. A bracket, (4*, extends downward and outward from frame A, and this bracket is formed with two arms, a a. Upon the arm a is pivoted a toothed segment, G, the teeth of which engage with those of the pinion b.
Upon the arm a is pivoted at h a lever, H, the inner end of which is pivoted to the lower end of a link, h, the upper end of which is pivoted at h to the segment G. Thus it will be seen that when the outer end oflever H is depressed the segment G will be raised and the roll B will be revolved. As the roll revolves the carrier F, working in groove 1), will be thrown to the left. When the lever H is released, the weight of the segment will cause it to fall, and the roll Bwill be revolved in the opposite direction, and consequently the carrier F will be thrown back to the right again.

The operation of the device is as follows: The sheets of the music are grasped by the clips i i 2', said clips being set to the righthand side of the frame, and the stops E being adjusted to accord with the width of the open sheet. As soon as the first page of music has been played the performer depresses lever H, and thus throws carrier F toward the lefthand end of the frame, the arm N moving forward to allow the sheet to turn. The travelers are not acted on by the carrier throughout the entire length of their moveleased, and its latch catches the arm of the next traveler, while the arm N falls back again upon the music-sheet. These operations are repeated until the whole number of sheets are turned. In case there are no returns in the composition this completes the action of the device; but supposing that at the end of the last bar there is a return to a bar on the first page, stop Z is pulled out, and as the first traveler reaches the bend inthe corresponding rod L the rod i is thrown forward so that when the carrier is thrown to the left the outer end of rod i slips over the face of the carrier and is thrown outward by return on the first sheet, it is desired to turn to the third the lever J is depressed so as to raise latch f, and thus allow said latch to pass over the arms of the first two travelers. Thelatch then engages with the arm of the third traveler, and when lever H is thrown toward the left it carries the first and second travelers with it.
It is evident that the number of travelers, rods L L, &c., and stops at m may be more or less than three, according to circumstances. The-knobs or rods a" i i are relatively longer in the order named, so that each knob shall be acted upon only by its particular rod L L, 850. i
In Fig. 5 the gear-pinion b is placed at the right-hand end of the roll B, while the segment G is pivoted upon a bracket, al, extending downward from end piece, a. The levers H J are pivoted upon a bracket, a extending downward and forward from frame A, a thumb-screw, a being used to pivot the levers. In other respects gthe arrangement is the same asbefore,excepting that arm N is dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a music leaf turner, a revolving grooved roll and a carrier operated thereby, in combination with one or more leaf-turners thrown by said carrier, and mechanism, substantially as described, for operatingsaid roll, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a revolving grooved roll, and a carrier operated thereby and provided with a latch, of one or more leaf-turners or travelers having each an arm engaging with said latch, and a bar for guiding the movements of the travelers and set obliquely to the roll, substantially as described.
3. The combination,with a grooved revolving roll, a carrier operated thereby and provided with a latch, of one or more travelers moving upon a bar set obliquely to the roll, and provided each with an arm to engage the latch, and fixed and movable guide-rods for eX- tending and retracting the traveler-rods to engage with and clear the carrier, substantially as specified.
