UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWVIN G. PALMER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,986, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed June .25, 1885. Serial No. 169,703.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN O. PALMER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a description of the same and of the manner of constructing and using the invention, in such full, clear, concise, and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained, and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention is of a hand wrench, fully described in what follows, in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the wrench, with the handle extending longitudinally. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the handle folded angularly to the body of the wrench. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the adjustable jaw.
A is the stationary jaw, and a the bodyshoulder of the wrench from which said jaw springs. Said jaw is provided with the rectangular bar a rigid with it and projecting outwardly from the inner face of said jaw, and at right angles to the same.
A is an independent adjustable jaw, with its mortise a corresponding in size to the size of bar (1 on which said jaw is designed to move. Jaw A has also the perforation a, for the accommodation of the thumb screw 0, which passes through it in said perforation, and has its end a loosely locked in stationary (N0 model.)
jaw A. Said locking is by means of an annular slot in said end of said screw, in which fits a through-pin, 0 said pin preventing the escape of the screw end specified as the screw is turned by the operator.
B is the handle, jointed in shoulder a by means of tenon b, fitted into the open end mortise, aflformed in said shoulder and secured therein by pivot a. By means of said joint the handle B is capable of moving either way at right angles to the plane common to the two jaws. Said handle may be cased with wood in the usual manner, if it be so desired.
A principle object of my invention as thus described is to provide a wrench with its handle so jointed to it that said handle can be conveniently used or operated in a plane angular to the longitudinal plane of the jaws. WVhen a nut lies close down upon a plane surface, it is often an awkward and an inconvenient matter to use upon it a wrench that has only the usual straight handle integral with the jaws; but in my invention, as will be seen, this inconvenience is entirely obviated. By the angular adjustment of my handle at various points, by means of the joint provided, much convenience of operation is secured.
WVhat, therefore, I claim is A wrench provided with a handle jointed to be adjusted to a plane angular to the plane passing through the mouth and jaws, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing to be my invention I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of June, A. D. 1885.
