0. P. LOOMIS & H. W. COOLBY.
REGULATOR FOR DYNAMO ELECTRIC MACHINES. N0. 337,776.- Patented Mar. 9; 1886.
/AT.TEST: INVEN O S osb'o P 1110077718 N. PUEHS, PhomLimu m hev, Washinglon. D. c.
OSBOBN P. LOOMIS AND HENRY VJ. QQOLEY, OF LYNN, MASS LOHUSETTS.
REGULATOR FOR DYNAMO=EL SP 'CEPICATION forming part of Letters Patent Application filed September 22, 18%. Serial No. 177,792.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, OSBORN P. Looms and HENRY W. GooLEY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful lm 'iroveinents in Regulators for Dynamo-Electric Generators, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to the automatic regulation of dynamo electric generators.
It has for its object the regulation of the working-circuit by means of a variable resistance in a shunt to the armatures; and it consists in the application of principles subsequently set forth, and includes such novelty as is embraced by the claims at the end of this specification.
The drawing hereunto annexed is described below by letters of reference in so far as our invention is concerned.
In the single figure, A is a dynamoelectric machine of any type, having armature and field-magnets G.
B is an electro-magnet in a shunt-circuit to the armature, and provided with a pole-piece, D, at one end.
E is a back piece to the magnet B, and is bent into the shape showni. 6., having a single rectangular bend.
F is a lever-armature, shaped as nearly as possible as shown-t. 0., provided with a projection,f, opposite the pole-piece D, pivoted l to one end of the piece E and to the pistourod G of the dash pot H, and having one end resting upon contact-points I, which are connected together by conductors J, of comparatively high resistance.
K is a shunt'circuit, above referred to, and passes not only through the magnet- B, but also through one or more of the contact-pieces I and lever-armature F, and Z represents the main circuit, in which may be included are lamps M, or other translating devices.
The object of the dash-pot H, pivoted to the end of the piece E, as shown, is for the usual purpose of dash-pots.
The operation depends upon the'principle that the short-circuiting or shunting the armature more or less produces a variation in CTRE G M AC l-l No. 337,776, Eider-eh 9,1886.
(X0 model.)
the working-circuit; also, when the workingcircuit in a shunt to the armature varies. Further, when the working-current varies, the magnet strength of the inaghet B also varies. In other words, if more lamps are introduced more currenttlows through the shunting arrangement, so that the lever F is pulled to the right from the position shown in dotted lines, and more of the resistances J are thereby introduced. Consequently more current is furnished to the main current as required.
\Ve are aware that variable resistances have been introduced into a shunt around the field-magnets, and we therefore lay no claim to such a disposition of the said variable resistance.
Having stated the object of our invention, having described it by reference to the accompanying drawings, having described its modas operandi, and observing that we do not confine ourselves to the exact proportions shown in the drawing or to the exact operations mentioned, what'we consider novel, and desire to claim as the invent-ion secured to us by the hereinbefore in part recited Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In combination with the armature and r field-magnets of a dynai'no-eleetric generator,
a variable resistance and electric automaticoperatiug mechanism therefor, both located in a shunt-circuit to said armature, the lamps or other translating devices being in series with said fieldinagnets, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a dynamoelectric generator, a regulator consisting of the combination of an armature, a shunt to the armature, an electromagnet in said shunt and provided with a pole-piece at one end, a back piece, E, for said magnet, bent at right angles, a lever-armature, F, pivoted at one end of said back piece, having a projection upon it opposite said polepiece and pivoted to a piston of a dash-pot, which is pivoted to the'other end of the abovenamed back piece, and a series of contact-pieces connected together by conductors of high resistance arranged in an arc to the axis of rotation of the above-named pivoted armature, and one of said contact pieces being in electrical contact with said presence of two Witnesses, this 7 t-h day of Seppivoted armature, the said contact-pieces, tember, 1885.
one or more, and said pivoted armature being in a shunt-circuit to the armature of the dynamo-electric generator, substantially as described. Witnesses:
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as EBEN F. P. SMITH,
OSBORN P. LOOMIS. HENRY W. OOOLEY.
