HENRY C. LEYDORF, OF HASKINS, OHIO.
CU LTIVATOR.
SPEGZPICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,596, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed. October 24, 1885. Serial No. 180,836. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY O. LEYDORF, of Hashins, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cultivators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part ofthis specification,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of one of my improved cultivator-s, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 isaside elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of thei'orward partof the same, partly in section, through the line-w m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a rear elevation of one of the shovels. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken through the line 3 y, Fig. 4, and showing a standard in section.
The object of this invention is to provide cultivators constructed in such a manner that they can be readily adjusted in width, and that the shovels can be readily adjusted in height and inclined toward one or the other side.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of variousparts of the cult-ivator, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
A is the central beam of the cultivator, and Y B G are the side beams. Uponthe forward end of the central beam, A, is formed ahook, D, to receive the draft, and to the end of the said hook is hinged thcupper end of the link E,the lower end of which rests upon theshauk of the said hook D,to prevent the draft-clevis from becoming accidentally detached.
To the upper and lower sides of the forward partofthe central beam, A,are welded or otherwise secured two short cross-bars, F, the ends of which are connected by rivets G.
The forward ends of the side beams, 13 O,are curved outward, and have recesses in their concaved outer sides, as shown in Fig. 8, to receivetherivetsG. With this construction the beams B C will be firmly supported when in working position, but can be readily detachedby swinging their rear ends outward.
The beams B A Care made unequal in length, and their rear ends are curved downward to serve as standards, and to them are secu red,by
The outer edges outward to engage with the hook-shaped edges of the hook-plates J. In the outer edges of the clamping-plates K are formed perforations to receive the bolts L,which pass through the said plates, through the shovels I, have their heads countersunk in the forward sides of the said shovels, and have nuts screwed upon their ends, so that by loosening the said bolts the shovels can be raised or lowered upon their standards or inclined toward either side.
To the central beam, A,a little in front ofits bend, is secured,by a bolt and nut, M,or other suit-able means, the center of the brace-barN, the end of which toward thelonger side beam, B, is curved to the rearward, and its end toward the shorter side beam, C, is curved forward, as shown in Fig. 1, giving an 8 form to the said brace-bar. The curved ends of the bracebar N rest against the inner sides of the side beams, B G, and are slotted longitudinally to receive the bolts 0, that connect them with the said side beams, B C. With this construction the side beams, B O, can be moved outward or inward, to expand or contract the cultivator by turning the bracebar N upon its center-bolt as a pivot.
In one arm of the brace-barN are formed a number of perforations to receive thehook P, the shank of which is hinged to the rear part of the center beam, A, so that the. said hook will hold the S-shaped brace-bar N, and with it the side beams, B C, securely in any position into which they may be adjusted.
Q are the handles, theforward ends of which are secured by a bolt or rivet to the opposite sides of the middle part of the central beam, A. The rear parts of the handles Q are connected and held at the proper distance apart by a round, R, and the said handles are supported at the desired elevation by the braces S, attached to them and to the bend of the central beam, A.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 5 Patent- 1.. In a cultivator, the combination of the main beam A,thecross-pieces F,tlie S-shaped brace N, pivoted centrally to the main beam, and having slotted curved ends and intermeo diate apertures, the side beams, B, having their forward ends curved to engage the pivots G, the bolts O,and the hooked rod P, sub stantially as set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a plow-shovel having a hook-plate, J. on its rear face, a clamping-plate having one vertical edge hooked to engage the hook-plate, and acentral bend forming-a passage between the plate and shovel, and a bolt securing the clamp-mate to the shovel at its vertical edge opposite the hooked edge, substantially as set forth.
