QUICK REMOVABLE AND ATTACHABLE BUTTON Filed Aug. 25. 1965 IN V EN TOR. M 4 3? A @559 United States Patent Ofiice 3,374,510 Patented Mar. 26, 1968 3,374,510 QUICK REMOVABLE AND ATTACHABLE BUTTON Joseph A. Freed, 849 Beck St., Bronx, N.Y. 10459 Filed Aug. 23, 1965, Ser. No. 481,462 1 Claim. (Cl. 24--103) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A garment button including a button member having a depression on its rear side to hold slidably captive a configurated pin member used to secure the assembly to a garment.
This invention relates generally to garment buttons. More specifically it relates to quick removable and attachable buttons.
It is well known the conventional buttons attached by thread have certain disadvantages. They cannot be quickly removed or attached when the garment is to be dry cleaned or the like; and thread, needle and scissors are required to be available for reattaching a button accidently fallen off the garment. These features are objectionable.
Accordingly it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved quick removable and attachable button which can be secured or removed in minimum time without necessity of thread or requirement of any tools; wherein it is not necessary to remove the garment off a person to accomplish the same, and wherein the button position can be easily adjusted for better garment fit.
Another object is to provide a button wherein the attachment means are fully hidden, thus allowing the entire front area to be available for decorativeness.
Other objects are to provide a button having novel securement means which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction and etficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily apparent upon a study of the following specification and accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a front perspective view of a button incorporating the present invention,
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged rear perspective view thereof,
FIGURE 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 3-3 of FIGURE 2,
FIGURE 4 is a front view of the button element per se,
FIGURE 5 is a view of the fastening pin per so as viewed in direction 55 of FIGURE 3, and
FIGURE 6 is a view of the fastening pin per se as viewed in direction 6-6 of FIGURE 3.
Referring now to the drawing in detail the numeral 10 represents an improved quick removable and attachable button according to the present invention wherein there is a button member 11 and a fastening member 12.
The button member 11 is comprised of a singular molded part made from any conventional button material and having any desired shape wherein there is a front decorative side 13 and rear side 14 bounded by edge 15.
In the button member herein illustrated there is a central depression 16 on the front side for receiving a photograph 17 or other decorative disc therein. Tabs 18 project radially inwardly over the depression for purpose of securing the photograph.
On the rear side 14 a pair of posts 19 are integrally formed, each post having a slot 20 therethrough, the slots being in alignment with each other. As shown in FIG- URE 3 the slots have a portion 20A which extends below the surface of rear side 14 and into the body of the button member. It is to be noted that the slots are perpendicular to the surface of the rear side 14.
The fastening member 12 comprises a formed wire pin of resilient spring material having a straight shank 21 which has a point 22 at one end and which has a loop 23 at its opposite end. As shown in FIGURES 3, 5 and 6 the loop has a specific configuration so to be self securing to the button member. The portion 24 of the loop which is immediately adjacent the shank extends to one side of a central axis through the shank, as shown in FIGURE 3. The loop portion 25 which is immediately adjacent portion 24 is located on the opposite side of the axis. The loop portions 24 and 25 may be bent approximately perpendicular to the axis of the shank as shown in FIGURE 6 so to provide a relatively flat area for conveniently pushing the pin durin securement to the button member. The terminal portion 26 of the loop is located on the said opposite side of the axis and includes a terminal end 27 in abutment with an intermediate portion of the shank, and a straight portion 28 which has an axis at an angle relative to the axis of the shank.
In operative use, to secure the members the pin point is inserted into the slot of either one of the posts and then into the material 29 of the garment. The pin is then pushed as indicated by arrow 34.9. Due to the relative size of the loop and length of the slot the pin will move with portion 28 sliding along surface 14 as shown by dotted lines in FIGURE 3. Thus the point 22 also travels along surface 14. When fully in, the corner 31 between portions 25 and 26 snaps down into the slot portion 28A thus swinging the point 22 to the outer end 32 of slot 20 in the other post. This action prevents bunching the garment material and causing wrinkles in the button vicinity in view that tension thereon is released at the final step of the attaching operation.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction it is understood that such changes will be in the spirit and scope of the present invention as is defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
1. In a button, the combination of a button member and a securement member for securing said button member to a garment, said button member having means for receiving said securement member, said securement member comprising a removably attachable pin made of resilient spring metal, said button member comprising an element having a front side suitable for decorative purpose, a generally fiat rear side bounded by an edge, a pair of spaced apart posts on the said rear side, a slot in each of said posts, said slots being in alignment with each other, said slots extending through said posts and being perpendicular to the surface of said rear side, a portion of said slots extending below said surface of said rear side into the body of said element, said pin having a straight shank, said slots being adapted to receive said straight shank of said pin, said shank having a point at one end and a loop at the opposite end, said loop having a first portion adjacent said shank which is on one side of an axis of said shank, a second portion adjacent said first portion, said second portion having a major part thereof on the opposite side of said shank axis, .saidcfirst and 1,
second portions being bent approximately perpendicular to the said axis of said shank, and a third portion adjacent said second portion, said third portion'being on the opposite side of said shank axis and comprising a terminal end in abutment With an intermediate portion of said shank axis and including a straight portion which has an axis at an angle to saidaxis of said shank, and a corner between said second portion and said straight portion of said third portion, said corner being springingly' received, upon flexing of said resilient pin, within the slot portion of one of the posts which is below the said rear side surface, so to secure said button member and securement member together.
