T. EDWARDS.
- CHIMNEY GAP.
No. 336,707. Patented Feb; 23, 1886.
WITNESSES INVENTOR:
ppr/v J W I BY JIM/W v ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS EDXVARDS, OF AMHERST, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA.
CHIMNEY-CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,707, dated February 23, 1886.
Application filed Derember 26, 1885. Serial No. 186,745.
(No model.) Patented in Canada June 15,1885, No. 21,888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS EDWARDS, of Amherst, in the county of Cumberland, Province of Nova Scotia, and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Caps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a chimney-cap composed of two semicircular or arched hoods halved or notched into each other at right angles or transversely, and secured to an open base to be fitted to a chimney-top, so as to present direct draft-openings through these hoods to the four points of the compass-east, west, north, and southand to present equal draft openings when the wind blows on a quarter;
Reference is to be'had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a View in perspective of my improved chimney-cap complete. Fig. 2
' is an end elevation showing an unobstructed draft through the lower section, with the upper section in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2, showing the lower section in side elevation and the opening in the top to connect the two sections.
The object of this invention is to produce a chimney-cap that from whatever direction the wind may blow the draft will be the same.
A in the accompanying drawings represents an open base-plate, which is to rest upon the top of the chimney, and is provided with a flange, B, to extend downwardly a sufficient distance on the inside of the chimney to hold the cap firmly in position thereon, as shown in the several figures. Secured to this open baseplate A is a semicircular or arched hood, 0, of sufficient length to extend over the draftopening D in the baseplatc A, as shown in Fig. 1. Into this hood 0 a correspondinglyshaped arched hood, E, is halved or notched at right angles or transversely, and secured thereto by rivets F or in any other conven-v ient manner. In order to connect the draft of this upper section, E, with the lower section, 0, the lower section is rounded out at G on its upper side, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. By this construction and arrangement of two corrcspondiugly-shaped hoods it will be understood that from whichever direction the wind may blow the draft will be the same, the combined hoods forming a cross, so as to receive the wind from any direction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved chimncycap, consisting of a flanged base-plate, A, having an opening, D, the arched hood C, secured to the base-plate over the said opening, and having an opening, G, and the arched hood E, notched to receive the hood 0, and secured thereto at right angles, substantially as herein shown and described.
THOMAS EDWARDS.
