Description

Jan. 9, 1968 I c LEMLY 3,362,031
MATTRESS DEVICE Filed Sept. 8, 1966 INVESTOR. C/IA/PL 5 6: L EML Y United States Patent 3,362,031 MATTRESS DEVICE Charles Lemly, 1307 Columbia Ave., Waco, Tex. 76711 Filed Sept. 8, 1966, Ser. No. 577,866 3 Claims. (Cl. -91) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a two piece mattress face rest adapted to be inserted within an opening in a mattress wherein top and bottom pieces joined to provide a sleeve to fit the mattress opening, both top and bottom pieces having a peripheral flange which lie flat on the top and bottom of the mattress, the two pieces snugly wedge mating at their end peripheries.
The present invention relates to venting mattresses, sleeping and convalescing devices and is to be inserted in such devices and will enable a person to rest in the prone position without discomfort.
In the past, sleeping or resting in the prone position has been uncomfortable due to the fact that the head must necessarily be turned to the side to permit proper breathing. Prior inventions wherein the purpose was to enable sleeping in the prone position generally required custom made mattresses with complicated apertures in which the head may rest. Among the advantages of the present invention is the fact that as it may be adapted for use with most mattresses and it is inexpensive to produce and use as contrasted to prior devices.
The present invention is also useful in convalescent and sick rooms where a patient may have oral or particularly nasal discharge of fluids. By utilizing the present invention, the patient may properly discharge fluids without moving from his position in the bed.
The invention is additionally useful in convalescent and sick rooms when the patient is required to breath an inhalant such as a vaporized decongestant. The appropriate medication may be placed in a spongelike receptacle of the present invention. Hence the medicinal vapors will be inhaled by the patient.
Referring now to the figures in greater detail, where like reference numbers denote like parts in the various figures.
FIG. 1 is a cut away isometric view of the present invention installed in a mattress.
FIG. 2 is a top view of the present invention.
FIG. 3 is a cross sectional View of the present invention taken along lines 33 of FIGURE 2.
FIG. 4 is a cross sectional view of the present invention in an alternate configuration taken along lines 3-3 of FIG. 2.
As shown in FIG. 1 the mattress vent 1 of the present invention which is in effect a face rest is adaptable to a mattress 2 by making an opening in said mattress which is large enough to accommodate the mattress vent 1 of the present invention. The mattress vent 1 may be elliptical as shown. An ellipse is more easily inserted into a cut in a mattress where the mattress vent 1 of the present invention is provided separate from the mattress 2. The mattress vent 1 comprises an upper portion 3 which includes a sleeve 4 preferably fabricated of a moisture resistant flexible plastic or even of metal and integrally shaped with a horizontal flange 5 at its upper- 3,35Z,@3l Patented Jan. 9, 1968 most portion 11 and traversing its periphery; a cushion rim 13 at the internal face and circumscribing the inner portion of the periphery of the sleeve 4. There may also be a step 17 and shoulder 10 of decreasing geometric size at the lower edge 16 of the sleeve 4; the lower portion of said step 17 having tapered sides of decreasing geometric size. If the alternate configuration not utilizing the step 17 and shoulder 10 is used, the lower edge 16 of the sleeve 4 is itself tapered. The upper flange 5 of the sleeve 4 contacts and rests upon the upper por tion of mattress 2 and sheet 6.
The lower portion 7 of the mattress vent 1 of the present invention is preferably fabricated of the same material as the upper portion 3 and has a sleeve 8 with an horizontal peripheral flange 9 at its lowest portion. The sleeve 8 is wider at its uppermost portion 18 so as to mate and fit snugly against the tapered edge 16 of the upper portion. The lower horizontal peripheral flange 9 of the lower portion 7 mates with and fits snugly against the lower face of mattress 2.
The cushion 12 provides a rest for the users head, with the cheeks and forehead resting upon this cushion 12. The cushion 12, in turn rests upon the cushion rim 13, which is integrally shaped with the inner face of the upper sleeve 4, and positioned between the upper flange 5 and the step 17 and shoulder 10.
At the lower horizontal flange 9, a screen 14 may be inserted and attached by conventional means said screen 14 may act as a rest filter and in addition act as a rest upon which any sponge receptacle 15 for medicinal inhalants may be placed.
In operation of the mattress vent 1, the user need only cut an opening in the mattress 2 and sheet 6 conformable to the shape of the sleeve and insert the upper 3 and lower 7 portions.
In use the cheeks and forehead of a person rest upon the cushion 12 and as the user breathes, air is drawn and filtered through the screen 14. If the invention is to be utilized as an inhaler, the sponge 15 is placed on the screen 14 and as the air is drawn through the sponge 15 the medicinal vapors will be inhaled.
If the mattress vent 1 is to be used during convalescing and when drainage is prevalent, the screen 14 may be removed and a container may be placed beneath the lower horizontal flange 9 to collect the discharge.
The terms and expressions which are employed are used as terms of description; it is recognized, though that various modifications are possible within the scope of the invention claimed.
Having thus described certain forms of the invention in some detail, what is claimed is:
1. A two piece mattress face rest adapted to be inserted in an opening in a mattress comprising a first portion including; an outer peripheral flange adapted to lie fiat along said mattress surface; a sleeve at approximately a right angle to said flange; an inner peripheral flange inside said sleeve adapted to receive a cushion material about the periphery of said upper portion, said cushion material adapted to protrude to approximately the level of said mattress surface; said sleeve having a slight taper inward towards its end away from said outer peripheral flange, a second portion including an outer peripheral flange adapted to lie flat along said mattress surface; a sleeve at approximately a right angle to said flange, said sleeve having a slight taper outward towards its end away from said flange, and the end periphery of said second portion adapted to engage the end periphery 3 4 of said first portion and wedge holding said mattresses References (Iited face rest i i Said i UNITED STATES PATENTS 2.
