(Cl. 40-152) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in picture frames.

A principal object of the present invention is to provide a picture frame for framing a daguerreotype picture.

Another object of the invention is to provide a picture frame with a symmetrical border for the picture.

A further object of the invention is to provide a picture frame for framing a daguerreotype picture with means for protecting the picture from abrasion.

Still another object of the invention to provide a picture frame that is attractive in appearance, simple in construction and economical to manufacture.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring now in detail to the various views of the drawings, in FIG. 1 a picture frame made in accordance with the invention is shown and designated generally by the reference numeral 10.

The picture frame 10 consists of a rectangular-shaped thin flat backing plate 12 of stiff pasteboard. The front surface of the plate is preferably marked with a line 14 delineating a rectangular area 16 to serve as a guide for properly positioning a picture, such as a daguerreotype picture 18 on a thin sheet of paper.

A thin fiat pasteboard mat 20 of the same shape and dimensions as the backing plate 12 is superimposed on the picture 18 and backing plate 12. The mat has a cut-out portion forming a window 22 of the same dimensions as the area 16 to expose the picture 18. An elongated groove 24 is formed in the outer surface of the mat closely spaced from each outer long edge. The front surface of the mat at each end thereof may be indented as indicated at 26. An indenture line 27 is marked around the window 22 closely spaced therefrom to enhance the appearance of the frame.

In accordance with the invention, a thin narrow paper binding strip 30 is provided along each long peripheral edge of the frame for clamping the superimposed long edges of the backing plate 12, mat 18 and cover sheet 28 together. The binding strip is U-shaped in cross section receiving the long edges of the plate, mat and cover sheet, between its

32 and 34, with the bight portion 36 thereof intimately engaging the extremities of the long edges. The binding strips are secured in place to the rear surface of the backing plate and to the front surface of the cover sheet by means of adhesive 38. A similar thin narrow paper binding strip 40 of similar shape with bight portion 42 and

44 and 46 is placed over the superimposed ends of the backing plate, mat and cover sheet, the strip 46 being secured in place by means of adhesive 48.

A perforated lug 49 is cut from the material of the backing plate 12 centrally thereof at its top end. The lug is adapted to be manually pressed outwardly of the frame as shown in FIG. 5 in order to receive a flexible element as a wire or string for hanging the picture from a support such as a house wall.

The binding strips which form the outer border of the frame may be of a darker color than the mat which forms the border of the picture thereby enhancing the appear ance of the picture and frame.

In FIGS. 6 to 8, inclusive, a modified form of corner construction is shown wherein the backing plate 12 is formed with a diagonal slot 50, the mat 20 with a similar diagonal slot 52 in line with slot 50, and the cover sheet 28' with a similar slot 54 in line with slots 50 and 52'. With the backing plate, mat and cover sheet in juxtaposed relation, the binding strip 40 at the ends may be fixed over the ends thereof and with a tool 56 the ends of both side members of the strip 40' may be forced into the aligned slots, and both side members of the strip 30 may be similarly forced into the same aligned slots, thereby forming a mitre joint 58 at each corner of the frame, which enhances the appearance of the frame and picture.

It will be seen that I have devised a picture frame that is flat and thin with smooth opposed surfaces adapted to receive a thin picture. The frame has smooth opposed surfaces so that a number of the frames can be readily stacked in transit. The differential in the coloring of the borders combine with the coloring of the picture to enhance the attractiveness of both the picture and frame.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I'claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. A picture frame comprising a pasteboard rectangular backing plate, a rectangular pasteboard mat superposed on the plate, said mat having a rectangular-shaped central opening therein serving as a window for a picture underneath the mat, said mat having grooves along its long edges closely spaced from the edges thereof and having the front top end thereof indented, a transparent cellophane sheet superposed over the mat, and paper marginal strips U-shaped in cross section clamping the edges of the backing plate, mat and cover sheet together, the front outer edges of the marginal strips at the sides embedded in the grooves along the long edges of the mat, the side members of the strips covering the indented portions of the front of the mat at the ends, said strips being secured to the backing plate and celluophane sheet by adhesion, and an integral perforated lug outstruck from the material of the backing plate at the top and center thereof for receiving a flexible fastening element for hanging the picture frame from a support.

2. A picture frame as defined in claim 1, wherein the corners of the backing plate, mat and cellophane sheet are formed with aligned diagonal notches and wherein the ends of the binding strips are pressed into said aligned notches forming corners in simulation of corners With mitre joints.

Claims

1. A PICTURE FRAME COMPRISING A PASTBOARD RECTANGULAR BACKING PLATE, A RECTANGULAR PASTBOARD MAT SUPERPOSED ON THE PLATE, SAID MAT HAVING A RECTANGULAR-SHAPED CENTRAL OPENING THEREIN SERVING AS A WINDOW FOR A PICTURE UNDERNEATH THE MAT, SAID MAT HAVING GROOVES ALONG ITS LONG EDGES CLOSELY SPACED FROM THE EDGES THEREOF AND HAVING THE FRONT TOP END THEREOF INDENTED, A TRANSPARENT CELLPHANE SHEET SUPERPOSED OVER THE MAT, AND PAPER MARGINAL STRIPS U-SHAPED IN CROSS SECTION CLAMPING THE EDGES OF THE BACKING PLATE, MAT AND COVER SHEET TOGETHER, THE FRONT OUTER EDGES OF THE MARGINAL STRIPS AT THE SIDES EMBEDDED IN THE GROOVES ALONG THE LONG EDGES OF THE MAT, THE SIDE MEMBERS OF THE STRIPS COVERING THE INDENTED PORTIONS OF THE FRONT OF THE MAT AT THE ENDS, SAID STRIPS BEING SECURED TO THE BACKING PLATE AND CELLUOPHANE SHEET BY
